I need some new pedals for my commuter / mtb. Currently I use some VP spd compatible which are getting quite old and dodgy.
I have been tossing up getting an eggbeater pedal or a good spd. Eggbeaters look good, but i'm worried about the lack of adjustment, with bad knees I like being able to adjust to a more comfy position.
So what do the assembles masses think ? To beat or not beat ?
Any recomendations on SPD's ? I was thinking eggbeater candy SL if I was to go down that track. Not sure how much I will have to attach soles of my spd shoes with beaters.
beaters are way-comfy. probably the most knee-friendly system I have touched (which includes spds, spdr, LOOKs, TIMEs, MKS, and straps).
the flaot figure of 6deg is rather misleading as it realistically is closer (if you have the cleats on the default positioning) to the 15-20deg 'disengage' figure The beauty of eggbeaters is: you can service em REAL easy. plug n the grease gun and flush out everything adn repalce with clean stuff. Can buy new bearing sets to revitalise old ones (Just done this. piece of peeesss) Clearance is huge You can enter in whatever bit happens to be facing up. you will never struggle at lights again. the perfect commuter pedal. Getting out is easy-twist. Bit of a hidden feature is they work in reverse. IE you pull up climbing/sprinting and this makes the mech TIGHTER not looser. IE you cant pull out of them sprinting 😄

The Candys are probably a bit more comfy than the eggbeaters (I haven't used em, but friends swear by them). I'd avoid the C though as they can be fragile. The candy SL is probably the pick 🙂.

I have Eggbeaters on my commuting bike and am happy with them now that they are properly set up. The "float" with these is quite unlike float with other SPD-type pedals, since there really isn't any resistance - this may be a plus for bad knees if you like freedom of movement. The only adjustment available is the angle of the cleats in your shoes, which took me some trial and error but is no big deal. I had some inital problems getting out of the pedals, and had to file down the tread on my shoes so that it didn't interfere with clipping out - I suspect this would be more of a problem with Candy's due to the larger contact area. Having said that, I don't think you'd really gain anything with the Candy's if you have stiff-soled shoes - what benefit do you think the platform might have?

yeah, that's a fairly common thing to look for with some mtb shoes that dont havve much clearance around the cleat area (ie on the sides)
'Apparently' the Quattro's (road pedal) is cool to use with any-style shoe but you dont wanna go the 'other way' ie no road shoe with the 'standard' eggbeater. I'm working towards getting some road shoes (still stuck with my mtb shoes since accident crunched em) and Quattros

I use Candys and SS eggbeaters. I agree the platform doesn't make much difference, but a friend and his wife have just swapped from eggbeaters to Candys and they prefer the Candy. Each to his own. I'm buying his unused eggbeaters.

You're making them sound awfully tempting...pity I've just set up two bikes with SPDs. I always thought beaters were zero float which is why I didn't get them. Bugger.
