Sounds like a Chicago area scene. From what people have said earlier about laws (or lack
thereof) regarding bicycle rights in Illinois, a separate bikepath may be especially good.
Just what is the current situation about bike riding in that state?

The legislature still hasn't passed any changes which mitigate the Boub decision.

In the last session, this bill was sponsored by a legislator from a neighboring district
(Nekritz), who is a former racer (Cat 2?), -- and if she will forgive the compliment, still has
the looks of a racer.

Legislative problems aside, the Chicago area is a good place to bike, as large urban areas go. The
city itself is supportive, the inner suburbs are older, and so have bike-friendlier designs. Out in
exurbia it's the land of the auto, but this is somewhat mitigated by the fact that since Chicago was
such a gigantic rail center, there are a fair number of abandoned rail lines that have become rails
to trails conversions.

At the personal level, it's about like always: just ride and have a good time, punctuated w/
incidents w/ cars and dogs. I prefer the bike path for my round-the-clock commuting from a
getting-spattered-by-a-drunk standpoint, although i enjoy riding through the corn and soybean
country roads more from a let's hammer/build miles/feel the wind and sun perspective.

On the macro level. the Boub case, a piece of singular judicial idiocy which essentially says bikes
don't belong on the Illinois road (an oversimplification) , spawned an attempt to legislate around
it, but the attempt is a little mired, details here
