I removed my 10-speed freewheel to replace a broken spoke. When I put the wheel back together, I noticed one of the inner axle nuts is thicker than the other and don't remember which side it went on. If anyone knows, please reply.
Also, does the locknut of the bearing cone go on the freewheel side? And, does a spacer go over this locknut, or under this locknut? That is, is the locknut against the bearing cone? When you get the bearing cones in position, is the non-locknut cone finger loose? If I turn it too tight, the wheel does not spin. Do you leave the inner axle nuts finger tight?
Yes, I should have taken a photo of the unassembled area, but did not. The Nishiki bike is from 1983.

Almost certainly the right, since with a freewheel the axle need to protrude significantly more from the right side than the left.

Is this a regular cup/cone hub or cartridge bearings? On cup/cone hubs, both cones need a locknut.
The bearings are in a plastic ring holder and a cone goes over them. There was only one cone locknut; I think it was on the freewheel side (5-sprocket freewheel). There are also the two inner axle nuts I originally wrote about. Do those act as locknuts after you put the cones in position before putting the wheel in the frame? thanks, Bob R.
