  1. Greetings.
My name is Bill Gottlieb: I'm a freelance journalist specializing in
health, with 30 years experience. I'm the author of three books
(including the 1.3 million seller ALTERNATIVE CURES) and hundreds of
magazine articles, and worked for 20 years at Rodale Press, as a writer
and as editor-in-chief of Prevention and Rodale Books. Currently, I am
writing a book on natural supplements to aid weight loss, with Harry
Preuss, MD, a Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University; it is
scheduled for publication by Broadway (Random House) in January 2007. I
am seeking anecdotes (first name, last initial) from dieters who
successfully used a natural supplement to assist their weight loss; the
therapeutic agents under discussion include HCA, MCT, green or oolong
tea extract, CLA, chromium, starch-blockers, chitosan, 5-HTP, hoodia
and caralluma, HMB, and BCAA. If you've successfully used any of these
supplement to aid weight loss, please write me at [email hidden]
and let me know, telling me about your experience. Thank you for your
    time and attention.
    Warm regards,
    Bill Gottlieb

  2. Hi, Bill!

As a graduate with a Masters (some 30 years old now) in journalism, I can
    only offer this advice:

From past experience, I can tell you that supplements don't work, and never
will with respect to weight control. The old adage of "exercise more and
eat less" always works. P:eople can eat more of this or less of that, some
will lose and others will gain.

If you study the science of the carbohydrate, things will actually become
    simpler to you.

As a journalist myself, I have always sought the truth. I found it. I hope
you keep your mind open and study this issue,

  3. I have been through three nutritional suppliment "fads" for memory, at a
fair expense and not positive result.

But, boy, were each of those damn thngs hyped to death.

    1) Acetylcholine
    2) Ginko Baloba
    3) Phosphatidylserine

Each of these had "studies" and "opinions" that held promise.

But, in the end, the greatest improvement was in the income statements
    of suppliment manufacturers and sellers.

My income was decreased from the consumption, and my memory didn't
improve, and GOOD studies showed that in general there was very marginal
improvement in memory unless some verys pecific factors were true for
the individuals --- special cases, not general results.

So, the results weren't much different from many "Get Rich Quick"
promotions, a few gained, but most lost money.

I would like to find some suppliment that "Melts FAT While You Sleep".

But, much of alternative medicine is like investment brokers.

A very very few of them can perfom better than flipping a coin over any
    long haul.

Every wild half assed approach to losing weight has at least a few
    positive testimonials.

Even committing suicide causes a weight loss from a decrease of water
weight as your body dries out. In this case, positive testimonials are
    suspect.

    1) Eat Till SATISFIED, Not STUFFED... Atkins repeated 9 times in the book
    2) Exercise: It's Non-Negotiable..... Chapter 22 title, Atkins book
    3) Don't Diet Without Supplimental Nutrients... Chapter 23 title, Atkins
    book
    4) A sensible eating plan, and follow it. (Atkins, Self Made or Other)

  4. From Walgreens.com on the memory aid... PS

    # Phosphatidylserine.
    # 100 mg Per Serving.
    # Nutritionally Supports Memory and Learning.
    # This supplement is a unique Soy Lecithin mixture of Phospholipids
including the important Phospholipid, Phosphatidylserine - PS.
    # Studies show that PS supports a positive influence on memory,
emotional balance, mood and cognitive focus.
    # Very limited and preliminary scientific research suggests that
Phosphatidylserine may reduce the risk of cognitive dysfunction in the
    elderly.
    # The FDA concludes that there is very little scientific evidence
    supporting this claim.

I can't recall a time that I have followed alternative medicine and
gotten a positive result..... except chiropracty.... and I appear to
have eliminated the need for weekly chiro visits by using exercise
techniques that I found in a medical book, by practicing MD's.
