Busy 3 day break from Hampshire to the Lake District to attend the
Remembrance Day Service on Great Gable. Early start Friday had Clare and I
driving along the A66 from Penrith by midday ....... in torrential rain and
storm force winds! Not a lot to see, and pretty miserable looking ..... but
still great to be in The Lakes. The weather did improve though, and at 2am
I was on my way from Great Wood car park to Ashness Bridge. Had hoped to
visit High Seat and Bleaberry Fell, but too late starting out. Anyway, a
walk up to Walla Crag then down Cat Gill was still pleasant, then back to
Keswick and the Dog and Gun for drink and food.
Friends Keith and Helen drove over from North Yorkshire on Saturday, so we
had a venture down Borrowdale. The four of us went up Grains Gill from
Seathwaite, then Clare and Helen turned right at the top down to Styhead,
while Keith and I went left for a visit to Great End. Not a very popular
summit, but great views on a clear day. We returned down to Styhead after
lunch, then back to Seathwaite. Had planned a return to the Dog and Gun for
a meal ........ but their kitchen had developed a problem, and no food
available. Good alternative though, thanks to Keith driving, a visit to the
Coledale Inn in Braithwaite. Another fine Lakeland pub.
Sunday was the main day. Clare dropped me off at Seathwaite at 8am, and I
made my way up to Base Brown taking the direct route under the Hanging
Stone. Wanted to avoid the busy path through Gillercomb. From the top I
continued on to Great Gable via Green Gable. After the service, I took
advantage of the brilliant weather and headed up to Allen Crags and on to
Glaramara, before dropping back down to the Borrowdale road. Was waiting
for a bus, but a very very kind gentleman stopped and gave me a lift back to
Keswick. Brilliant as I had at least 20 minutes to wait. It meant Clare
and I were in the Dog and Gun by 4.30pm having a very welcome beer.
Great weekend .... but sadly back to work tomorrow. Photos from each day's
