I just received some replacement batteries that are 14.4 volts by mistake (I ordered 13.2), I thought that 13.2 volts would be the recommeneded voltage for an HID. I think over-volting would make a Halogen run brighter (and thus make the battery life shorter).
What are the pros/cons/effects of running 14.4 on 13 watt NiteriderHID bulb. HID's are already bright enough as-is, I don't need them any brighter, does the higher voltage make them run longer instead???
HID is high intensity discharge lighting usually using metal halide as the ignited gas. Without getting to far into it higher then rated voltage will harm the ballast and reduce the lamp life dramatically. Halogen is a form of quartz light completely different from HID. It is similar to incandescent light and the light will get brighter with increased voltage. The increase is 8.5% which would not reduce the lamp life much. Halogen lamps can be operated +- 10 %. On a halogen your battery runtime would be reduced by about 8.5%.

Overvolting makes bulb life shorter (which might be by a lot, as in hook up, [censored]), it makes the bulb brighter and whiter by heating it up further, and at the higher temperature resistance will decrease by a bit, which might be enough to counteract the larger capacity of the battery.

An HID system includes a ballast which regulates the current to the lamp, as well as supplying a really-high-voltage pulse to start it. Running it on excessive voltage probably won't change the lamp operation, but it might fry the ballast. I wouldn't do it without checking with the manufacturer first.
In summary, I guess it's a bad idea to over-volt an HID due to the the ballast. I just got an RMA from the battery comany and I get to return the goods for the right product. Worst case I would have removed 1 of the 1.2 volt "C" cells and jumpered to get the right 13.2 volts.

I don't know if this applies to all HIDs but Lumicycle's can be used with 14.8 volts. Looks like the same lamps are used for both their 13.2 and 14.8 battery options.
