Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum and am looking for some advice

I am a 31-year-old (male, 6’1”, 205 lbs) who used to be very fit in his early twenties and then had to give it all up due to work commitments. I started cycling to work a couple of years ago (25 mile round trip) as I realised that I had to do something about my weight. However, the problem is that I now live 200 yards from work. Over the last 5 months I have done some riding at the weekends and the odd spinning class during the week. I have also cut out the booze and reduced the amount that I eat. As a result I have lost 20 pounds and I have really got the biking bug again!

My goal is to lose another 15 to 20 pounds and well as to compete in some races next year. The weather has now turned and it rains a hell of a lot where I live so I took the plunge at the weekend and purchased a Polar Heart Rate Monitor and an indoor trainer. Up until now I did not have any structure or routine to my exercising. However, I think that with a bit of thought and planning I will be able to improve the effectiveness of my training and will be able to achieve my goals. I have been doing quite a bit of research, but the more I read, the more confused I get as to what I should be doing.

I have come up with the following (based on what I have read and what I know is realistic. I would be very grateful if anyone could let me know if I am on the right track:

Day 1: Indoor trainer 90-120 mins (60-70% HR)
Day 2: Indoor trainer 40 mins (50-60% HR)
Day 3: Spinning class 45 mins (80-90%) & Weights (back, chest & arms: 2 x 12)
Day 4: Rest
Day 5: Spinning class 45 mins (80-90%) & Weights (back, chest & arms: 2 x 12)
Day 6: Rest
Day 7: Rest

I was thinking that in the interests of variety I would swap spinning classes for sessions on the trainer as and when I feel like it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!
