  1. Cateran Trail: trip report

    Various useful websites:
    Ramblers http://www.ramblers.org.uk/info/paths/cateran.html
    Commercial site http://www.caterantrail.com/
    Rucksack reader http://www.rucsacs.com/books/ctt/
    PKCT http://www.pkct.org/caterantrail/

It is suggested that TGO did an article on this trail a little while
ago, but I couldn't find it.

    • 4 days' walking, but didn't bother with the 'leaf stalk' Blairgowrie
    to Bridge of Cally
    • Maps/ Guides: Explorers 387 (ISBN 0319233413) & 381 (ISBN 0319233391):
Rucksack Readers 'The Cateran Trail' www.rucsacs.com £10.99 ISBN
    1898481210
    • Best bits: Enochdhu-Glenshee-Glenisla.
    • Transport: Train to Perth then bus/taxi (taxi: £25) to Blairgowrie.
    • Technology: surprisingly, decent mobile phone reception except in the
odd small pocket. Internet access at Blairgowrie library, but not
    really anywhere else.
    • Surface: forest track, old drove road (ranging from hard surface to
    boggy/tussocky) to tarmac
    • Route-finding: plenty of waymarking. The route has moved
significantly (esp round Glenisla) from that given on the OS map, so the
Rucksack guide is necessary, but OS maps also necessary too (e.g. if the
    mist descends)
    • Terrain: steady inclines, mostly good footway, a few small streams to
jump across but no serious river crossings, and plenty of bridges
(seemingly recently built). Plenty of opportunity to divert into Munros
round Glenshee, and one 'Graham' Mt Blair.
    • Accommodation: went B&B hopping. Plenty around, although outside the
main season, several establishments were closed
    • Generally an enjoyable undemanding trail.

    Allan
