Beach Rd crash

Guy at work was riding along Beach Rd to work this morning and said he was
overtaken by a big group of roadies. Apparently they were having a sprint
and the riders were all over both lanes. Next minute, one of the guys who
had pulled into the right lane goes down amid cries of "you fsckin' idiot".

One guy was down pretty bad. My mate stopped as he reckons that he has
observed crashes within groups that he has been riding with and all everyone
does is stand around and look at the damage to the bike!!! The guy who had
crashed had a broken collarbone and once it was determined that he had ambo
cover, an ambo was called to take him to hospital.

My mate said that it was a bit silly for these guys to be having a bunch
sprint just as the peak hour rush begins and I tend to agree. There was a
truck in the lane behind the guy who went down and apparently he didn't have
much room to pull up in time before running over the said crashee.

Anyone from here see this one???

Sounds to me like the truck was following too closely. The only
acceptable excuse is he was watching good sport.

The story I got was that the guys on the bikes moved out from the left hand
lane and into the right hand lane in order to get around slower
riders.......this was done by them cutting in front of the truck. I don't
think that the truck driver can be blamed at all if he was simply overtaking
a group of riders who were initially travelling in the left hand lane (where
they should have stayed) at a slower speed than he was.

I am all for a bit of competition in a bunch ride and it is great fun to do
group sprints but there is a time and a place for everything........I agree
with the guy from my work that Beach Rd at the start of rush hour is not the
time or place for that sort of stuff to happen.

Confirmed! The council opened a new skatepark next to the high school
near us about three weeks back. My son told me that yesterday a lad went
down head first into the concrete from his BMX. The immediate response
was for people watching to rush forward and check that the bike was ok.

A few months ago, I had a moderately high-speed stack in the wet. The
first thing I checked was my bike. Then I checked the bottle of wine and
the bottle of toffee apple liquer in my backpack weren't broken. Then I
poked at my helmet, thought it was okay, and rode to uni. The next day I
realised it wasn't okay and bought a new one and remembered the details
of the stack that had previously eluded me. *oops*

Flesh heals. CF doesn't.

Years ago I met an ambulance man at a party. He asked what to do when a
motorcyclist had a crash because he would turn up and the conversation
would go something like
"Where does it hurt?"
"My bike! What about my bike?"
"Where does it hurt, can you see my hand?"
"My bike! What's happened to my bike?"

So he wanted to know how to get them to stop obsessing about the bike
and pay attention to their own broken bits.

I advised him to say "It's dinged up a bit, but it looks repairable", no
matter the actual case. That way they'd probably be able to focus
enough to say "ow".
