  1. I suffer from really painful feet (in my case the ball of the foot) after a
long walk? Lasts a day or two afterwards too - making multi-day walks a bit
    problematic.

I have a pair of 8 year old Scarpa's that I'm beginning to think are
possibly responsible - so I just invested in a decent and very comfortable
pair of Solomon's. Will use them in a couple of weeks and see if it cures
    it.

Other than that I may start having a look at insoles or something.

Just makes me wonder if it is the boots or whether or not it is my feet.

Anyone else been through this sort of thing and managed to get a solution?

    Cheers

    Antony

Try Sorbothane footbeds, worked for me

Me too. It's much more likely to be the footbeds than 'the boots in
general'. With increasing A.D. you seem to start losing a lot of the
natural padding that you used to have on your feet for some reason.
Thick well padded socks help too (Smartwool works for me) if there is
space in the boot for them. Also depends on definition of 'long walk',
and what load was being carried - after 25 miles I'm not much good for
anything the next day, regardless of what footwear / socks / etc. I
    used.

  4. Is this a new problem or one that has been around for a long time? Which
    Scarpa model are you using?

Insoles might make a difference although Superfeet are quite hard themselves
for the first few months or so.

I suspect it will be worth buying some new boots.

Walking every weekend will probably help. And running regularly
    will help.

  7. snip>> go and see a podiatrist

Best advice here by a mile. I had a similar problem develop a few years
ago. I had really painfull ankles for no obvious reason, I tried
everything form sorbathanes to new boots etc etc. It was only when i went
to a podiatrist I found I had an achre problem that was causing the weight
to be distributed unevenly. He suggested some inserts for both feet.
(£20-00 a pair at Boots) and it was sorted overnight. Like throwing a
switch. Wear them perminanly now ahve no problems.

Whatever you do, dont do nothing and dont go out and up your workrate.
Running and even more walking wont help unless its a fitness issue. If its
anything other than fitness you need to get proper advice.

On holiday this year, the balls of my feet were quite sore after a few days
walking every day. I got some pads (Scholl I think) which hook on to the
second toe and sit under the ball of the foot (I already had superfeet
footbeds). I found the extra cushioning made my feet much more comfortable
for the rest of the week.

  9. Well I really appreciate everyone's advice here.

I've never suffered any problems before last year. Then a 3 day walking
holiday left me in agony (balls of my feet). I'm walking Kilimanjaro in
September next year - so I need them fixed to be able to walk for 6 or 7
    days on the trot.

I did Mosedale Horseshoe a couple of weeks ago and I was in bloody agony in
the last kilometre back to Wasdale Head.

As for fitness - I'm hitting the gym 3 days a week and running 13 kilometres
every Sunday morning - so I hope that isn't the issue.

I've ditched my old boots (Scarpa's) and invested in some new Solomons. I
needed them anyway. I'll try them out next weekend and see how that goes.
Failing that I'll pop in to the podotherapist (I live in Holland and that is
the name here - so I have since found out).

    Wow this group is great!!!!

Cheers everyone for the constructive advice

Oh yes, all the time :-(

Ah. You want a solution? That enables you to carry on walking? Hmm.
I suspect that experimenting with insoles may be the way to go. I've
got a pair of cheap ones that make life easier for me; however they
don't totally solve the problem. If I were doing more walking I'd
probably be investing in Superfeet and hoping that they were as good as
others have claimed. I agree though that the burning sensation on the
ball of the foot is totally demoralising and extremely not-nice. It's
the thing above all else that has me limiting my walks to relatively
short distances and times, and is a right royal PITA.
