A wild guess: your front and rear derailleur needs to be (re)adjusted.

You might look for "Anybody's Bike Book" at a local library, or
search the web for instructions on adjusting your derailleurs.
Sheldon Brown probably has something.

Did you buy it from a bike shop? Have you talked to them? Most bike shops
would adjust this for you as part of the deal. If you bought it used, or
online, then you are sort of "on your own." From your wording above, I take
it that you don't feel very technically qualified. These things can seem
mysterious and puzzling to a total beginner, so I suggest you take it to a
bike shop, or find a friend who knows about bikes.

This is a derailleur adjustment issue. Take it back to the dealer. They
should be able to do this quickly, easily, and cheaply.

The simple answer is to find another shop that can adjust the shifting for
you. 🙂

you are likely to lose the chain if you shift with both the front
and rear at the same time. These gears have less chain tension
than older friction systems and just because its possible to shift
both at once doesn't mean its recommended.

2. Assuming you've had the bike in the shop once already to look at
the problem, I'd say that you need a bike shop replacement. Find
a new shop, your current shop is infested with monkeys posing as
mechanics.
