GPS charging

After you buy the hardware for GPS what aother costs are there.
i.e for the use of their very expensive satellites. Is it like a mobile
phone where you pay a monthly fee?

No it is gratis. Free to use. The US military pays the cost of the
satellites and an enlightened attitude to government data lets us use
the signal for free. Whether this attitude will remain enlightened has
been one of the reasons behind the setting up of the European Galileo
project. The only costs to you after buying the hardware are batteries

No it is gratis. Free to use. The US military pays the cost of the
satellites and an enlightened attitude to government data lets us use
the signal for free. Whether this attitude will remain enlightened has
been one of the reasons behind the setting up of the European Galileo
project. The only costs to you after buying the hardware are batteries

As the previous posters have said, there's no charge for the satellites.
If, however, you buy a GPS with mapping facilities you have to buy the
maps - usually on CD.
If you're just walking you can feed in sufficient co-ordinates by hand
without the need for fancy stuff - a very basic GPS and paper maps is
all you need.

There was a disturbing report in the papers last week that the Galileo
project is in desperate need of £14billion (I think) in order to complete
the project. The inference was that if the money was not stumped up then the
project might be scrapped. Suppose that'll be another tax rise!

Personal use of gps satellites is free. Mind you the US DoD *says* that
it will not switch them off or otherwise muck around with them. Believe
that if you will.

The EU Galileo system will also be free for personal use.
