My wife bought an iPod shuffle for me for my birthday to take on my runs. Trouble is, the earbuds that came with it won't stay in my ears.
Then leave them out. Become one with nature. Hear the birds sing. Hear the rustle of the wind through the leaves as your feet softly glide over the pine-needled path. Listen to the quite solitude of your inner being. Listen to the musical masterpice of Nature's symphony.

Hearken!
For the tender purr of the V6,
For the bracing squeal of the rotor, the drum, the shoe, the pad, the disk, the rubber, the asphalt.
For the heart-quickening din of doggies, report of runners, buzz of bicycles, modulation of muggers, vibration of vicious attack-birds.

Agreed. I was going to say something about being able to hear the sounds of "real life." In my case no music also allows me to hear the occasional smarta$$ remark, directed to the old jogger, by some grossly overweight kid as they shuffle off to McDonalds with drool on their faces.

Those of you who like to run to music, what do you use?

I like very much to run with music too. I use earbuds of the kind that have a piece that goes over you ear, so they hold in place easly all the time. You can by pretty decent one for some $15 bucks, or that's what I did here in Madrid.
You want the worlds best headphone for running? Get the Koss Sportapro (about $30.00). It will not fall off your head and the sound is equal to stereo speakers costing thousands. Search for them online. Buy them and if you don't like them return them. If you keep them Koss gives you a lifetime warranty.
Do you all think that earbuds are a bit safer than mini-headphones. It seems the earbuds do do not cancel out all other sounds. Having music is nice, but I still want to hear some of the world around me - for many reasons. Also, do the headphones get a little hot?
Earbuds block all the sound out. Mini-heaphones (portable open headphones) let enough sound in (and out) for you to hear any potential danger. The portable headphones do not get hot although in hot weather 85F+ you'll get a little bit of sweaty ears. Not a problem unless you're running more than 5 miles. If you work out with big headphones you'll probably be uncomfortable in hot weather.

IMHO the most comfortable and secure are the type with a band that goes over the top of your head. I realize they're somewhat out of style now, but there's a reason they did it that way first - it's the most functional.
The ones with a band around the back of the head work well too and are compatible with hats, but they put more weight on your ears and so are a little less comfortable IMHO.
The ones with no band are not suitable for running imho. The fall out, and any movement inside the ear makes a lot of noise.

The sony sport that I recommended is over the top but real light weight. Only setback is to put the shades on first before the headphone.
The behind the ear one seems to be less reliable since the wires tend to rub on your back and the rubbing transmitted as noise to your ears if only misaligned slightly.
Another style is pivot-huds with a loop around your ears. Problem for them is no single loop size fits all.
