tension does not have any influence on unclipping.

The way I understand the mechanism of this beautifully simple pedal,
the
above quote tells the truth.
Could it be that the reason for the testified unintended unclipping
from
the Eggbeaters is not soft springs, but worn down cleats?

In my case no: even with new cleats, and with different Beaters
experiencing the same loss of spring preload, the problem of an
insecure cleat engagement persisted. But occasional unintended cleat
releases were not the only aggravation of the condition, though they
did occur more frequently with prolonged use; an annoying degree of
movement between at the cleat/pedal interface was the primary
irritation. That is, between the foot pulling upward and pushing
downward during the pedalling cycle you could feel the 'click' of the
cleat shifting within the pedal's wings as the load direction changed.
I found this maddening - and there was absolutely nothing to be done
about it.
Ivar, by way of comment on your two pairs of Beaters not exhibiting the
aforementioned problems, let me elaborate on my experience. Over the
years I've had a total of 4 pairs of Beaters: Two were first generation
Steel Beaters with ChroMo spindles; Two were the all Stainless Steel
"S" model. All the pedals were installed on road bikes. While all the
models suffered diminished spring preload with use, the rate of
decrease in tension, and attendant play between the pedal's wings, was
by no means consistent - I removed a pair of Stainless models after
only 1 1/2 years while an almost 3 year old ChroMo model is still in
service.
I speculate whether this is attributable to manufacturing issues (Crank
Bros contracting different suppliers with different standards?). Of
course, type and frequency of use bears on the situation, but where it
relates to my pedals, it doesn't explain the discrepancy in the rate of
tension deterioration between different sets of beaters. My suspicion
is that not all beaters are created equal - some are more durable than
others; perhaps Ivar your two pairs are of a better grade.
But I'll reiterate: with use every one of my beaters has developed a
loss of spring preload and play between the wings. In your post you
quoted Crank Bros website: "Is the spring tension adjustable? No, it's
not necessary...." I disagree; Crank Bros is waxing disingenuous here.
The only basis for making such a claim is if the pedal's spring doesn't
relax or its stops don't wear with use; and despite the merits of the
Beaters I doubt Crank Bros. would stand behind such an assertion.
The simplicity and elegance of the pedal's design notwithstanding, ALL
parts wear. And with no recourse to compensating for that wear (i.e.,
spring adjustment) the dilemma is quite simple: the greater the play in
the pedal's wings the further they must be separated (by the cleat) in
order to attain the degree of spring force equal to that in a new pair
of pedals and sufficient to ensure secure engagement. So, unless Crank
Bros is supplying automatically expanding cleats ;-) reduced engagement
force is the inevitable outcome.
Maybe Crank Bros. has changed the specs of their current models to
address the issue - I don't know. But this time around I'm not giving
them the benefit of the doubt.
