    Hi All,

Not sure if you might remember, but I wrote about 3 weeks ago asking
whether it's possible to lose weight while taking doxepin (an old
    tricyclic antidepressant).

Well this is nearly week 3 and unfortunately the scales nor the inches
have budged. I am feeling a little disheartened, as I have been
following Atkins religiously, am in ketosis and last time, of course,
I had lost around 3kgs by now (I was also taking a different anti-d).

Thing is, I could go off this one and try another one, however the
doxepin is agreeing with me mentally and the depression has never been
more under control. I have previously tried many others to no avail,
so it's like a trade off. Will I need to live with this extra weight
in order to have good mental health? Or is it just as simple as my
being a little more patient and the weight coming off very slowly?

As I said last time, exercise is a little tricky because of a chronic
medical condition, however having said that, last time I was on Atkins
the weight still came off even though I was rather sedentary.

Should I try the "fat fast" or just keep doing what I'm doing? What do
you think? Do I keep going and just hold in faith that the weight will
eventually come off? Or is it clear by now that the medicine is
blocking my ability to lose anything at all?

    TIA,

p.s. (According to the weight/height chart, I need to lose around 20kg
    or around 44 lbs)

    Try cutting calorie totals.
I'm personally using a protein fast (successfully) after a very long
    stall.

Fat fasting is too miserable. Cutting fat and eating ONLY meat is far
    easier and works too.

    And increase the cardio work.

    Cheers!

Are you a woman who still has menstrual periods? If you started at the end
of your last cycle (or whenever you drop water weight - it varies), you
could simply be building up water weight that masks your loss. For women
in their childbearing years, we really need to look at weight loss from
cycle to cycle, not day to day or even week to week.

If it's not that, then I don't know. My own suggestion would be to stay on
the anti-depressant at least for a while. As long as you're not gaining,
that's a start. You may need to tweak the diet. You might also want to log
what you're eating on fitday.com or a similar program.

If you don't start seeing some progress soon, you might want to post a few
days' worth of sample menus to see if people can spot something that might
    be giving you trouble.

Also, while exercise isn't absolutely essential for losing weight, it will
help keep your metabolism churning along (I think you said that was the
problem w/ the anti-depressant). If you post about what you can and can't
do, we may be able to suggest some exercises that you could still do that
    would rev things up.

Good luck and don't give up. People have gone through far longer stalls
than this and started losing again.

  5. I went through a period where there was no more weight loss even though I
was keeping to the diet (but not in ketosis). I just figured my body had
found its set point, or something like that. After a couple of months or
more, I suddenly lost 5 pounds. I don't know how suddenly, though, because I
was discouraged and had stopped weighing myself! Then, one day, I thought I
could see my ribs in the bathroom mirror, so I stepped on the scales and was
    surprised.

However, exercise is key! Even if you could lose all the weight you wanted
to lose without exercise, you would just have a thinner body that couldn't
do anything. Fitness is everything! Figure out some way to get more
    exercise. It's necessary.

There is an assumption that Atkins will cause you to eat fewer calories due
to reduced appetite. Your meds may shift that balance.

Try measuring food on a kitchen scale and tracking things in Fitday.

    http://www.Fitday.com

If the calories average low enough, you will lose weight.

I have no connection to Fitday, except as a download customer.

Well, I am able to walk at an average pace for around 15 minutes per

Okay thanks! I guess it's a bit difficult because I am stalling at the
very start of this new lifestyle. Last time I tried Atkins I lost
weight easily and effortlessly although as I mentioned before I was
not on this particular antidepressant. I am going to hang in and see
what happens after the fourth week.

Thank you for your help and suggestions.

    patients.

Somehow, I imagine that you are driven to this drug because of lack of

Weight gain from your medicine really sucks big time, and the physicians

Yep. That sounds about right. A good majority of people do put on
    weight with this particular drug.

The first one. I have tried many and various medications, and so far,
this has been the only one that has helped in a marked way. Others
have been anything from ineffectual to downright dangerous. (one in
particular gave me an anaphalactic reaction).

I'm lucky with my doc. He understands the hard work I put in to get to
my goal weight before I took the new medication, and he is championing
me with Atkins, however he says that if I don't show any signs of
losing weight soon, I will need to come off the drug. (I am not

You never know, just around the corner there might be a little bit of
give and my body may start to shed the kilos. This is what I am hoping
    for. 🙂

Sounds like NOT gaining weight on this drug is a winner. If you (and your
doc) are comfortable with your nutrition on Atkins, maybe staying on both
the diet and the drug long-term is a healthy approach. Is there any research
that says whether people just keep on putting on weight, or do they plateau?
If the latter, maybe that's when your Atkins persistence would start to pay
    off.

It's a shame about the exercise. Could you talk to your doc about a referral
to a physio or similar, to work out something that's safe for you, and that
you can do when you've got some energy?

    Best of luck with it!

    Nicky.

I never thought of this. Thank you.

    Quoted message said:

If it's not that, then I don't know. My own suggestion would be to stay on
the anti-depressant at least for a while. As long as you're not gaining,
that's a start. You may need to tweak the diet. You might also want to log
what you're eating on fitday.com or a similar program.

    I will do this too.

    Quoted message said:

If you don't start seeing some progress soon, you might want to post a few
days' worth of sample menus to see if people can spot something that might
    be giving you trouble.

I'll give it another week then if I show no loss I will post a few
    daily menus.

    Quoted message said:

Also, while exercise isn't absolutely essential for losing weight, it will
help keep your metabolism churning along (I think you said that was the
problem w/ the anti-depressant). If you post about what you can and can't
do, we may be able to suggest some exercises that you could still do that
    would rev things up.

Well, I am able to walk at an average pace for around 15 minutes per
day. Some days I am unable to do any walking. I haven't tried swimming
yet, but I thought I might go to the local pool and try to do some
laps very slowly, not pushing myself too much. I am no longer able to
cycle or do vigorous aerobic-style exercise. I was also thinking about
starting a little bit of yoga. Perhaps I may be able to do this, I do
    not know until I try.

    Quoted message said:

Good luck and don't give up. People have gone through far longer stalls
than this and started losing again.

  15. You could try water aerobics. You could just walk in the pool if you
can't afford a class. If you do go to a class, don't be discouraged if
you can't finish the session. Just go back the next time. I've gotten
    out of the pool.

    Hi All,

Well this is nearly week 3 and unfortunately the scales nor the inches

following Atkins religiously, am in ketosis and last time, of course,
I had lost around 3kgs by now (I was also taking a different anti-d).

This is kind of a long shot, but is it possible for either you or your
doctor to contact the Atkins Center regarding antidepressants that
have been used on the diet? I'm thinking some classes are more
compatible than others with this approach.

Could be, although he is not happy with the amount of weight I have
gained. I am going to a naturopath this coming Wednesday to see if
there is anything that I can take to help stoke my metabolism a little
bit. Of course it would need to be compatible with the doxepin.

It depends on the person. Some people just keep putting on the weight.
I have held now (give or take .5kg) for nearly four weeks, so I would
imagine that if I wasn't doing Atkins, I would be in for real trouble.

    Quoted message said:

Yes, I believe this is true, however I feel so very uncomfortable with
my weight at the moment. It is making moving difficult and I do not
    like the way I look.

I have done this in the past. 🙂 I just need to wait until I recover a
little more and I will start once again. Even before this I am
starting to walk a little more each day.

I really like this idea too. I'm just waiting for my body to heal just
a little more then I'll be on my way.

Yep. That's just exactly it. I'm heading out shortly for a quick walk.
It's lovely this time of evening. 🙂
