  1. I have a bar end shifter touring bike and this box of parts: 105 9 speed
brake/shifters, a FD5504 (the one Shimano says will work) road front der,
and a 110/74mm triple crank. I know the left shifter will work with the
regular 52/40/30 front rings, but I would like to run a 46/36/24 straight
cut rings-no pins or ramps. Can I get this setup to index shift nicely? If
not, can the left side 105 shifter be set for friction?

  2. Why not leave the bar end shifters on? Regardless of that, only
possible issue is those chainrings are a little small for the curve of
a "road" front derailer. I am not sure which one the fd5504 is, but you
might want to get a MTB fd to better match those rings. You should
probably be all right is spite of no ramps or pins. Campy ergo shifters
are friction (or something close) on the front, but no can do with
    Shimano.

I've found that with the bar cons that I don't shift enough and end up with
less endurance available for a long ride carrying full panniers.

The mtb der would be great, but I'm told that the problem would be indexing
properly because front shifting for road bikes works with a shorter cable
    pull.

  4. Is that the fault of the barcons or your riding style?

I think Sheldon would recommend an old RSX triple front derailleur for
your setup. I think the lack of pins and ramps will require you to ease
off the pedal pressure to make the shift, but otherwise won't affect
    things.

I have an old Deore 110mm bolt pattern ring with Shimano's pins and
ramps. (I think- it's in my leaning pile o' chainrings.) If your
straight rings don't shift well enough for you, pinned & ramped rings
    are out there.

  6. On my tourer it originally came with a 52/40/30 and a Tiagra front
derailor. I switched out the 52/40/30 for 48/38/26. It now shifts
    better than before.

I don't know which front derailleur that is but I do know that MTB front
derailleurs don't work with STI road levers. Something about a different
cable throw between road and mountain groups in the front. I use a 105 road
triple front derailleur with 9 speed Ultegra STI break/shift levers and it
works great on a Sugino 26-36-46. You end up with two trimable positions for
the small and middle ring and one position for the outer ring.

Thanks, that is good news. You're right about the front mtb derailleur not
compatible with a front indexed road shifter.

With a full touring load, most of it over the back wheel, plus my 220 lbs
plus the steel framed bike without a spec of carbon fiber in it, I don't
like taking my hands off the bars too often.

No and no. The smaller diameter will not matter, and you won't get a
Shimano MTB derailleur to shift properly with STI. There is one MTB
derailleur that will work if you insist on changing; check with Sheldon
Brown on that. But it should not be needed.

No friction with STI but as long as you aren't trying to shift to a
bigger ring under lots of pedal load, it should work fine. DO NOT use a
shimano MTB front der. NOT compatible with road STI.
