'S not a snake, it's a slow worm, or legless lizard. It eats insects
and although quite common in the UK is fairly rarely seen on account of
it being a coward where people are concerned, and who shall blame it?
If you pick it up (gently) you will find that its skin is cool and dry.
It won't bite you (you're too big) and as soon as you put it down it'll
slither off into hiding.

Fran gets it right first go, also identifiable from snakes by the
presence of eyelids, but you have to look a bit close. This chap was
crossing the trail we were on in Croatia on Sunday morning. I am
fairly certain it is a chap by the blueish spots round his face area.
