  1. Last night I tried to do a 1rm test for my squats. My intention was to
squat a few times, then use a 1rm calculator to figure it out. This was
mainly to be safe, as I currently don't have a rack... still. So, I cleaned
as much as I can to my shoulders, and then went for as many reps as I could.

    Problem.

I did thirty seven, and could have done a few more.

Now, this was the max weight I can get onto my shoulders from the floor, but
it's rediculous to be doing forty odd reps every set.

Any ideas for what to do, replace the squats with something else, or do a
different kind of squat, perhaps hacks? Thanks.

Get a freaking squat rack already:

Or work on your presumably pitiful clean; OLer might expect to front squat
    triple his max clean.

You are either a freak of nature, or you need a lot of work on your
    clean.

Or he is doing a power curtsy instead of a squat?

These are full, ATTG front squats?

You front squatting here not back squatting right?

Less than $30, says they'll hold 2000 lbs. per pair, ought to let you
increase the weights a bit. You'll have to bottoms-up squat to start
with but you won't get 37 reps with the weight you can b/u squat.

$270, free shipping, just do it.

Do the deadlift instead. Lift as much weight as you can and
    you'll know your 1RM.

I would call that more of a squat stand. No protection for failures,
which is what the OP seemed to be after. Here's a good deal on a basic
power cage, squat rack, whatever. Shipping included for $300. I may
    need to spring for one.

Buy a squat rack or power cage (for the bazillionth time) hehehe :-)
You could try dumbbell lunges, and work up in weight. They're like doing
one leg squats. there are three main ways of doing lunges: step forward,
step back, and split stance where both feet remain in position until you
finish the set and change legs. Same goes for side lunges. You just have
to be a bit more careful with these than you would with regular squats.
Until you can get a proper squat setup, you'll have to adapt. Personally
I prefer heavy barbell lunges in a power rack ;-)

    Cheers,

Phew, you didn't launch into the power rack rant I was expecting. Anyway,
heavy lunges in a rack? Surely if you had a rack then squats would be the
    weapon of choice?

Not everyone can do them all the time, some people like variety, it
works balance differently, etc etc etc Lots of reasons to do them even
    if you have a rack.

Well, no such thing as a free lunch. The uprights are only 24" apart.
My old rack has them 27" apart and I feel that's just barely enough and
more would be nice. The racks that cost more have a lot more
front-to-back room. I don't think the adjustment increments on the
safeties are terribly close together, but their 6" apart on mine and
this one looks better than that.

Still, for what it costs, it'll let you squat. I'd likely save my
pennies and get a bigger one if I could.

I just read somewhere, that stepups are better substitute. Some Russian
scientist once observed, that in the bottom position of a back squat
there is a tendency to round your back, which can be harmful. And
stepups were supposed to be an answer to this problem. Best height was
reported to be such, that when standing on your toes the top of the
tight on the step should be parallel to the ground; "right" utilization
of quads and hams - or some such thing.

Leonid Taranenko, iirc, broke world records after not back squating for
4 years in a row. He was supposed to perform stepups with close to
    400lbs for triples, though.

Anyway - I do split squats and pistols. It's simply easier to just roll
my dumbbells out and exercise instead of rigging something and going
    somewhere to do stepups correctly.
