I'm trying to remember the name of my fist mountain bike.
Bought in either '85 or '86, it was the first mass-market mountain bike Raiegh produced in the UK, and the last production lugged mountain bike frame Raleigh made before all the lower end mountain bikes went to welded frames. It was 15speed, friction thumbshifters with horribly ineffective early cantilever brakes and also came in 5 and 10 speed variants. I think it originally came in some sort of chocolate brown paint finish, but the only photo I have shows it in painted in black and white, which fits with me getting it resprayed at the factory in current production colours the year after I bought it. (I was an aprenntice engineer there, working my summer holidays, and got a sly respray and rebuild each summer..)

In the summer of 1985 I bought a Raleigh Maverick. It was as you describe, other than the colour. Mine was metalic grey, and I took all the stickers off it. It was new to the market then.
I sold it to a friend of mine in 1988, who I think last used it in 2000, which was the last time I saw it. The brakes were fine if you put Kool-stop pads on them and adjusted the straddle cable to be as flat as possible. It was very heavy, though, and very slow on the road.

back in 1987 or 88 or 89 I remember looking at a Raleigh Chinook, white and purple I think.
My dad had (and may still have) a Maverick. I'm not sure which model year.
His was bronze-coloured, lugged Reynolds 531 with a Sugino PX triple crankset and an SR or Sakae seatpost with a quick-release saddle clamp with about 2" of fore-aft adjustment. It had a Bull Moose style stem, a very broad upswept chromed steel bar, friction thumbshifters, and big gold 4-finger brake levers. Ring any bells?

My Maverick is stood outside looking a little rough, but yes that was the first production MTB Raleigh did.
