I just got a screaming deal on a brand new Deda Mag00 stem via Ebay. Why? Is there something about this stem I should know about? Are they prone to breaking? I am planning on using it on a secondary (in-town riding, winter training, LSD type rides)....The stem coming on my new bike will be a 120 so I found this one. I am just amazed that a stem that once (just a couple of years ago) sold for well over $200 is now not worth very much at all!

Be extra careful tightening the bolts on the stem. Both the steerer clamp and the handle bar clamp plate. The threads are in the magnesium stem body. Magnesium can strip very, very easily.

Magnesium isn't one of those materials that most feel comfortable using in an application where failure, as they say, isn't an option. It doesn't seem to hold threads well, it's prone to failure if damaged... Magnesium is one of those often-rediscovered "wonder materials" which someone in turn re-discovers why it's not so practical after all.

Is the geometry such that you can drill it out and use nut-and-bolt through-and-through?

Some mag stems are/were prone to failure... as in defects in the material leading to sudden breakage. This was not a thread stripping issue. I don't know about this one in particular... but since it is so cheap, I'd be suspicious. Do a search and see if you can find any info.
