Is it just me, Spock - er, Paris - or are these missions getting
easier?

We toured many times as a family of four for 3 or 4 weeks in Europe on
the tandems with one pannier per person for everything including the
sleeping mat & bag, clothes, personal stuff and cuddly toy and a BOB
trailer for the tent and cooking gear.

things could get tricky.

Correct. And it was, I have to say, fabulous. I did not read any of
the books, I was too busy talking to people like Barry Tuckwell and

Michael got to play things like a Wagner tuba, piston horn, Ab alto
horn, pocket cornet, some natural horns from Jiracek (really good) and
of course the legendary Mass Blow, around 100 horns playing the Egmont
Overture. Very loudly.

A tribute piece for Ifor James, Duke Elington arranged for horns,
piano, bass and percussion (what fun! we made them play it twice),
the horn section of LSO, a hilarious duet on piston and Vienna horns
by Jeff Bryant and Michael Thompson, and not one single prima donna
among the several dozens of players, who included professors of horn
from several countries, principals of a number of major orchestras and
of course Barry Tuckwell himself.

Roll on the 2006 festival!

Would have loved to get there. Were there any Vienna Horn manufacturers
exhibiting? I have my sights on one now, but trying some out without
flying halfway across the continent seems almost impossible.

I'm not sure anyone is making Vienna horns in any significant numbers,
although having heard one I can now finally see what the fuss is
about. Maybe there will be some at the international horn symposium
in Cape Town next year?
