  1. Hi there. ive just brought myself a road bike and i would like some tips on training. im not look to be an all out comptetion person. but enough to be able to do long runs and perhaps some good times on trials events. if anyone got any tips would be glad. things like drink snack meals etc.

    thanks

  2. There's a book that is pretty decent (in my mind) called "The Complete Book of Long Distance Cycling: Build the Strength, Skills and Confidence to Ride as Far as you Want" by Burke and Pavelka (Bicycling Magazine). It is aimed at recreational riders (not race riders or competitive athletes). Page 122 is a layout of "Training for 50 miles", which, is a 6-12 week programme. Pages 8-10 describe how to use your Heart Rate Monitor for Training. These two sections, plus p. 126 "Nutritional Adjustments" provide core knowledge. I really like this book, and find it indespensible.

  3. Dont know much, but I know this- STICK WITH IT! Good Luck and WELCOME!😄

Sounds like a good book. I haven't read it but it sounds like it's right up the OP's alley. It would probably be much more helpful than the anecdotal advice he'll get here.

MartinT10, my only advice would be to wean into it. It's much easier to tack on mileage with cycling than with running but that doesn't mean that one should start piling on the miles right away. Take it slow and methodical. Don't judge your improvements by making every ride a time trial. It's counter productive.
