Are the sprockets in a nine speed cassette narrower than in the eight
speed or are the spacers just narrower. I like to mix and match
sprockets from different cassettes. I want to use sprockets from an 8
speed cassette in a 9 speed cassette.

I have mixed Shimano 8 and 9 speed cogs. I think there is a difference
in cog width [1], but it's such a small difference that a few cogs here
and there won't amount to anything significant.
[1] http://sheldonbrown.com/k7.html#spacing says 1.8 vs 1.78 mm cog
thickness

The spacers are definitely narrower.
