Changing to somewhat more "post" than I think was originally meant, for
the last couple of days Roos and I have had dinners with a very large
chantarelle component, because walking down through the woods at the end
of Sunday's walk there were masses of them just asking to be picked, so
we did. And very nice they've been too!

Some years ago I did a lot of travelling up and down the country and in the
course of looking for places to eat I began my great steak pie quest. Now
it's perfectly possible to find our national dishes in many pubs - you know
Chicken Tikka Masala, Chilli, Spag Blog - but where are the good pies these
days?

Donkeys years ago in my student days, I used to visit the Stonehouse in
Sheffield where they served an excellent home-baked minced steak and onion
pie in suet crust. It was wonderful and had the punters queuing 4 deep.

More recently I thought I'd found the ideal steak and kidney near
Lichfield - but then the pub changed hands. Top of the charts right now is
the steak pie at the Farmer's Arms in Muker. Beautiful home baked plate pie
and good veg. Oh, followed by apple pie and custard, washed down by Old
Peculiar.

So, where are the best pies to be had?

Just drifting back to the original thread, I do like the Steak Frites at the
Tempest in Elslack near Skipton. Pricey but yummy.

Hop Pole Inn, Limpley Stoke, near Bath used to do nice pies.. proper
pies, with pastry all round, not just a dollop of stew with a bit of
puff pastry on top.

I only say 'used to' because I've not been for a few years as I'm oop
North now, but I expect they still do them :-)

Just an observation, since The Buck Inn at Buckden was mentioned on here
recently. I visited back in May and the food and service was surprisingly
poor, to the point of being quite comical, in fact it became the ice-breaker
for a number of conversations between customers. The barman would disappear
for long periods leaving the bar unmanned, the offer of several dishes plus
coffee before they managed to work out what it was I did order and produce
it around 1 hour later, sadly it was definitely not worth the wait! I'm in
no hurry to return, but I'll let you make your own decision.

On the subject of pies, I had a "Desperate Dan" pie from a pub in the Black
Country a few years ago now that was memorable, forget the name of the place
though.

Had a very nice steak and stilton pie in the Royal Oak, Sparklow, on the
Tissington Trail the other day . Yumm.

I remember a wild night out in a pub called Mad O'Rourke's, I think it was
in Tipton or Dudley, that involved a pretty massive pie as part of the
proceedings, but that was many years ago. Was that the place?

Definitely superior pub grub at the Royal Oak. The only downside
is that it can get a bit smokey

My un-recommendation for the day is the Hardwick Inn near
Hardwick Hall. Utter sh!te. I was sooooo disappointed because
there was a faded old Youngers sign on the outside and I was
almost beside myself with the prospect of a jar of No3 only
to find it was an old sign and they hadn't sold Youngers for
years. The food was rubbish and the pub was dirty. Avoid.

Mad O'Rourke's Pie Factory, that's the one. I remember it being one of the
pubs frequented by the Black Country Beer Bus, so lots of people throwing
beer down their necks as fast as possible before jumping on the bus to the
next pub, which created an interesting atmosphere! Always fancied a trip on
the bus, but never got round to it. Doubt I could manage it these days...

But my mum does the best steak pie i've had!

Not that helps anyone else out there: -)).

As always though, reading the other replies, the best ones always seem to be
for a limited time span. My local used to do the best steak and kidney (pick
them 'orrible kidney out!) that was mainly steak, but it doesn't any more
(ans hasn't been my local for 8 years or so). It was cheap too, kept me
going through my student years in Bangor.

Don't bother buying steak pies in pubs. THE finest steak pie in the country
is without a doubt manufactured in the Clayton Park bakery near Blackburn.
The finest version on a number of recipes they produce is the steak ,
mushroom and peppercorn pie. It can be purchased in Simons sandwich shop
Ramsbottom at around £1.00 per pie or you can go to the sandwich shop in
Great Harwood on Church Street ? and buy for around 75p for the cold pie. If
anyone would like a pie showdown then I am willing to meet them in the
Northwest with one of these pies to try the competition, be prepared to lose
though.

I do not work for the bakery either... as an add on it is near the old
Karrimor factory in Clayton le moors so you could visit the factory shop and
get a sniff of the baking smells. In fact just go for a sniff instea,d
Karrimor just isn't the same anymore.

shop is on St Huberts street, near to the corner with Queen street, not
church street.Happy eating .

I had a very nice pie at (possibly) The Three Tuns in Filey, Yorkshire in
September. Very much of the 'school meals' mould as it was a big solid
square block cut out of a large dish. Served with the usual 3 veg and washed
down with cold lager it was a nice solid filler at the end of 5 days walking
down the Cleveland Way.
Shame about the pub being a loud, noisy football bar but the eating area was
separate and had a fishtank to watch as you ate, much better the inaudible
TV behind me.

While we're on the matter, I should draw the attention of those
folk in and around the Thames valley to a shop called Sweeney Todd's
in Reading. A pie of just about any flavour you wish can be bought
in said establishment. I was particularly fond of thier hare and
cherry pie. Just the thing to pack on a walk on the Ridgeway or the
Wayfarers. You can tackle any barrowwright that turns up on the
Sarson Stones or at Waylands Smithey with a Sweeney Todd pie.

Buck Inn Malham do 'Malham and Masham Pie' , steak and ale using Old
peculiar and whole baby onions - was very good last time I was there.
