Magellan have UK topo maps for their GPSs - you can view samples at
their website. Check an area you know before buying, because the areas
I've looked at are missing significant numbers of paths.

Garmin are still talking to the OS. I do not expect resolution any time
soon - the OS don't need the money and Garmin don't need to provide the
maps.

I assume you did mean the UK - US topo maps are freely available (as in
=free=) from several sources.

For Magellan, there's MapSend Topo GB:

Costs about £130, and includes contours and some paths / tracks. You can
preview it online to see how much detail it has.

Or for Garmin, there is Dave Storey's free contour maps:
http://www.smc.org.uk/books/books_contour_maps.htm
They are only contours and trigoints / some hill names, i.e. no paths /
tracks etc.
And as they are unofficial they may be a bit more complicated to install
and load onto the GPSr.
