A bicycle could be offered free with every home on one of the largest
housing developments proposed for Norfolk in the next 10 years, in a
pioneering bid to tackle traffic congestion.
Norwich city councillors are insisting on the condition from any developer
interested in the 34-acre, 1100-home Three Score site at Bowthorpe, near
Norwich.
The innovative move, which would also include storage space for the cycles
at each home, is the latest bid to encourage residents to leave their cars
at home and opt for environmentally-friendly transport.
Judith Lubbock, non-executive member for transport at the city council,
said: "We've got a planning design brief out where the developers will have
to provide a cycle for every dwelling.
"There will also be an obligation on the developer to provide a storage area
for every dwelling on that site."
She added: "When you are the landowner and the planning authority, it gives
you the opportunity to decide what goes on there. It fits in nicely with our
desire to encourage a modal shift from the private car to people using
cycles."
