  1. Just took the family to Minehead butlins for the weekend and part of the
deal is that I get to do some walking. Back in the spring I did Minehead to
Porlock one day and a quick jaunt up Dunkery Beacon the following day. This
weekend I was having just the one walk so decided to start from County Gate
walk down into Oare back over Deddy common and catch the SWP towards
Lynmouth. Covered about 8/9 miles but was absolutely knackered by the time I
got back - but with a huge smile on my face! The morning was really warm
and sunny but every now and then the mist rolled in from the sea. Just as I
got to Emble wood I passed through a gate and as I turned to shut it a large
Stag bounded from the banking where I had just walked and into the wood.
Amazing, I was only 200 yards from the sea. I had carried my camera quite a
bit but was not quick enough to catch a picture. Didn't see anyone the whole
time I was walking apart from the deer and loads of pheasants. The Car Park
had been empty when I arrived but was now packed. Had a quick chat to the
chap in the visitor centre who informed me I was quite lucky to see the deer
and so close to the sea n'all. One disappointment was not being able to see
the Welsh coast - he informed me that Thursday just gone the Brecon Beacons
were clearly visible - I had recalled driving home from Port Talbot that day
how clear the air was so could well believe him - I said that I had been up
on the beacons a few time and managed to see way past Swansea Bay on
occasions towards this part of the North Devon coastline. Took a drive to
Lynmouth and returned to Minehead shortly before lunch. The more I visit
Exmoor the more I like it - I must make the effort to get back there
    sometime, fabulous!

Agreed. We walked in Easter Hill on Easter Day this year. A fabulous
area. I wonder if the difficult coast path keep the area relatively quiet.

Don't tell everyone, it's only a small National Park.
You'll have the bloody Ramblers there next. :-)

Quite possibly true. I can see Exmoor from my local hills, and it's
doubtless visible from the Beacons on a clear day - so presumably it
    works t'other way as well.

The "Danger Path Closed" signs certainly seemed to keep bits of it quiet a
few years ago. We never seem to get as far as Exmoor these days, The
Quantocks always seem to do instead when we drive past them on the way,
    pretty similar.

On Dunkery Beacon there is a disc on the beacon giving distances and views
from the hill...... one of the spots noted is Sugar Loaf mountain at 52
miles - pretty incredible, Sadly the day I was up there you couldn't even
    see the sea!

The day I was on the Sugar Loaf all I could see was a horizontal snow
storm. On the way up it had been lovely and crispy warm; on the top,
however it was a very different story. Brrrr. I'll bet a few here
    remember it well...

It was rather very crispy warm when I went this August! The views were
good but the fact that the summit was circled by a search helicopter did
distract somewhat. I liked Sugar Loaf's characteristic shape as a landmark
during my Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons walk - sort of "oh look,
there's that old fellow again" every now and then.

Which reminds me, I still have to do some of the photos and write-up...
    Term time is cruel!

I have some lovely shots of the sunset from Selworthy Beacon, taken during
my trip to those parts in August. Absolutely beautiful, even the ones with
    me in the shot!

It's time for a TR, see my new thread.
