Yo, be safe. Hope you have power at home! We went out for 10 minutes, came back on, went out again,
and then went on and stayed on. Sounds like power is being restored to the outer edges of the
outage, so hopefully you'll get it back soon. Have a good ride, maybe people will get the point when
you bike right by their stopped cars!

the news. NYC without power looks pretty crazy, but I wonder how Detroit will come out of this. At
least it doesn't look like what every suspected at first.

I'm in Amherst. NiMo's Plant in Niagara Falls was generating 50% of NYS's power AFTER the blackout,
10% before.

This one was *not* "Buffalo's fault" and there was no "lightning strike" (in 100% sunshine???). The
nearest "lightning strike" at the time of the outage was in *Chicago*.

Wait for the *facts*.

Heh, yeah, sounds pretty crazy.

On the island of Zakynthos (where we just got back from) power went out on average 3 times a day,
sometimes (mostly) for no more than 20 minutes, other times, maybe an hour. Think their generator
musta kept on *running outa fuel, heheheheh.......

*(If you've ever been to Zakynthos (aka Zante) you'll know what I mean about
this.....heheheh.......).

Shaun aRe - only times the fridge pump was _ever_ off in that heat was during the power outs.

Sorry to hear about all you city folks' power woes ;-) Here on or little island in the middle of
the bay, we have power (although we lost it briefly Tuesday night) and to spare. We actually had a
local store advise in the papers that they were scaling back the A/C in the place to conserve
power. Most cuts here are at 5:30-6:00 pm when folks get home and crank the A/C. What do they think
the ocean is for?

NPR just reported that this outage was based somewhere in the midwest. Sounds like you are correct.

Indeed. I never said there was a lightning strike, BTW. It was obvious that the lightning strike bit
was bogus. There wasn't a cloud in the sky in Buffalo yesterday.

I've been reading about this as a possibilty for years. As complex as the system is, it's amazing
that it doesn't happen more often. I'll bet no one's to "blame", it was just one of those things
that happens to complex, highly safeguarded (so we don't end up with burnt-up generators and power
lines when things fail) systems.
