  1. Hi, advise on this would be greatly appreciated...

After completing the 40 mile Lyke Wake Walk I have a numb big toe, it
feels a little tingly and just not quite right. After searching through
the internet I can rule out several things, it is not the cold nor is
it trench foot. Another search came back with ill fitting boots, well
the boots certainly aern't too tight, if anything they have too much
give in them after several hundred miles having been walked in them.

There is no pain, its just annoying so would welcome your comments.

    Thanks
    Amanda

I get the same thing (toe next to little toe, left foot). I put it down
to age and decrepitude, but I suppose it could be leprosy or
    something....

I knew someone with the same problem. He took his boot and sock off and
there was a rubber band wrapped round his big toe! :-)

I suspect it'll be due to the fact that you just walked 40 miles on it.

Maybe a tick has sucked all the blood out of it!

    Hi Amanda,

I had a numb big toe (outside edge) for 7 months after doing the
Pennine Way, and it's numb again now almost 6 months after walking
    across Scotland.

I think it must be that my boots (different pairs each time) rub on a
nerve, even though I wasn't aware of it at the time. I'm coming to the
conclusion that it's not terribly important, and I wouldn't worry too
    much if I were you.

  7. .... advice on this would be greatly appreciated ... I have a numb big toe
    ....

Check and make sure that you haven't got an underlying blister below the
nail. You'd be surprised at the pressure this can cause and make the toe
'feel' numb - to say nothing of eventuall being b****y sore!
The nail may go yellow - if there's any infection - or purple - if there's
    any bleeding!
Good luck with it whatever it is! Nothing worse than sore toes when tramping
    the hills and glens!

Nah, just age. Sometimes this happens to me, but it seems really random!

  10. Hey Amanda how about your arms? did they go numb on the trip?

Check the toe and be sure there are no hidden blisters or injuries
external. Mine will get numb if the nail was too long for the sock or
the boot. duh. simple to fix and prevent.

If you have no notable problems and it clears up swiftly... just let it
be known that the toe just hiked 40 miles and it is not happy!

How come it did not go numb during your training?

    Did you use poles?

  11. Hi, the walk was fabulous even though it was the hardest thing I've
done! It took us 18 hours which we weren't very impressed with, until
the GPS recorded that we were only actually walking for 13 of them!
Mind you the check point stops were getting longer and longer as people
were getting blisters etc... My arms and hands were fine, I used some
foam underneath my rucksack and I used my poles and all was ok. It has
to be said that the poles were a god send, on some of the descents I'm
not sure my knees would have held out without them. The toe thing is
actually my other half, and no he didn't get anything during training.
We're thinking that a nerve has been trapped or pressured excessively
and that the feeling will come back when its ready.

Aches and pains aside though, its a superb walk and I would highly
recommend it to any serious walker. I'd love to go back to see some of
it again (ie the bits we did in the dark)

    Amanda

  12. Thanks for the trip report too. Really glad the poles helped you out.

    Trek with careful toes... :-)
