Interesting. But, it seems that they'd take longer to put in than tape.
I might try them if they're as cheap as tape.

OK, so these are 1/2 the weight of Velox tape? I'm guessing that's
still no heavier than the two layers of filament packing tape that I
use, and the packing tape costs a whole lot less.

case. But in my 15 years, I've never broken a spoke. (I know I'm going
to regret writing that)

These seem like a solution to a problem that is itself artificial, and
that is riding low-spoke count, machine-built wheels.

They also suggested to me that it might help with tire mounting
difficulties I have with their 451mm "Aero" rim (on a custom wheel I had
built by a shop). I believe the premise is that thick cloth tape like

They sent me a pack for free to try out, which I will when the
opportunity to change the front tire on my 622/451 wheel recumbent arises.

As for machine built wheels, Velocity's web site says they hand build

I've used Veloplugs for about 8 mos. now.

They cost more than tape, ~$.20/hole and will take more time to put in
the first time.

You can lose one when you change out a tire but that doesn't seem to
happen.

They are lighter weight.

The plugs should last for a very long time and will not get soaked in
a wet ride.

The biggest advantage to using Veloplugs is that they take less room
than something like Velox tape and tires can be removed and mounted a
little easier.

Clever. Design a rim with an insufficiently deep rimtape bed so it
makes tires almost impossible to mount and then invent the solution for
the problem.

BTW, I've found great inconsistency in 451 rims in regard to tire
mounting ease. I have a Bike Friday with Sun rims on both wheels but
one is a more aero design and is the worst I've yet encountered for
mounting tires. In contrast, the other makes tire mounting trivial and
much easier than on any of my 622 rims.

Note that the Velox or other tape can't change the Bead Seating
Diameter (BSD) of the rim, but it can reduce the effective depth of the
bed in the rim into which the tire bead is temporarily pulled while the
tire is being installed. This does make a big difference in the
difficulty of tire installation.

Well, duh... rim cross section makes all the difference in the world
regarding ease of tire installation. If you had said "I have two rims
that are otherwise identical except for how easy it is to install the
tire" I'd be somewhat surprised. Your "other" rim obviously has a
deeper center well, which eases tire fitment enormously as you pointed
out (below).

FWIW: I have a Velocity "Aero"

Tour Easy. Even with cloth rim tape, I find that tire installation is
no more difficult than other narrow-ish rims.

They sent us some. They often fall out when pulling the tire/tube off.
be tough to loose one on a ride...

You will find that some of your tyres will mot fit snuggly on the rim
without rim tape. Okay, some don't fit well anyway. Surely tyre
manufacturers take into account that the average wheel has such and such
inner rim circumference and rim tape also.
So, a good idea but maybe, perhaps, not always pratical. Perhaps keep
some with your spares at home for the next new tyre your try, see if for
that tyre and rim combo it works or not.
