  1. Try this fast favorite!

    1 cup Minute Rice
2 10-oz pkgs frozen green beans
    10 wieners
    1 T butter or margarine
    1/3 cup chopped onion
1 4-oz can mushroom pieces, drained
    1/8 tsp pepper
    2 tsp flour
    1/2 cup chicken broth

Cook the rice and beans according to package directions. While they
are cooking, cut the wieners into chunks and sauté in the butter or
margarine in a skillet. When they are golden brown, push to one side
of the skillet and add the onion, mushroom pieces and pepper and cook
until tender. Stir the flour and chicken broth into the onion mixture
and simmer until thickened. In a large bowl put the rice on one side,
the beans on the other side, and pour the wiener mixture over all.

    This gets raves every time!

  3. Ten weiners and only one cup of rice ? Maybe I'm just used to dealing
    with larger weiners ?

    Better :

2 Cups of long grain rice
2.5 Cups of chicken stock or broth
    1 large green bell pepper
    I large onion
3 Stalks of celery with leaves
4 roma tomatoes, chopped and seeded (peeled if it makes you feel
    better)
(may sub a can of diced tomatoes in a pinch - cans seem to make Jimmy
    happy...)
1 pound of andouille sausages (or one pound of kielbasa in a pinch)
2 pounds of chicken with bones (cut up)
OR 1 pound of boneless chicken
    1 bay leaf
    1 pinch of salt
3 cloves of garlic minced or pressed
    bacon grease or oil
    1 tablespoon flour
    handful of fresh parsley, chopped

In a large pot or large cast iron pan, brown chicken in bacon grease or
oil. Remove. Add sausage, onion, peppers and celery. Saute until onions
are slightly brown. In a saucepan, add 1 tablespoon of flour and two
tablespoons of oil. Stir over medium heat until it browns. Remove from
heat and add to large pot or pan with chicken, sausage, onions,
peppers, and celery. Add broth or stock. Stir in garlic, bay leaf, and
tomatoes. Cover and cook on medium heat until liquid is absorbed.

Stir in parsley and serve with a bottle of hot sauce.

You can laugh. But I went to university in the US and that's exactly
the sort of thing I saw a lot of American students cooking. Plus
eating the tinned beans straight out of the tin without warming them
    up LOL.

Perhaps if they were cooking in a dormatory room on a hot plate this was
their approximation of "homemade" cooked with limited facilities. Or
perhaps their parents cooked this way (wouldn't surprise me). I wouldn't
eat this. I do, on occasion, use canned soups and dried soup mixes for
cooking, but nothing to this extent!

They weren't. I lived off campus. Things like that were offered to
    guests invited for meals.

Probably did. Had to learn to make slop from somewhere.

Nothing wrong with that at all. It's a matter of how much and how
    frequently.

    I believe it.
I don't think enough parents teach their kids how to
    cook before they leave home.

But they do. They teach them to cook things like that.

Or they're just broke -- when I was in
college (and very poor), I spent a week eating nothing but cream of
wheat (that's all we had in the house). Now I hate the stuff...

Was more broke at university than most of these people. Still knew how
to cook better than that LOL.
They probably grew up with food like that and didn't care to learn
    otherwise.
