10-speed 105 group opinions?

It is not "blatantly obvious" to me. If you have seen the new 105, you
know that in terms of ergonomics, finish quality, and weight (according
to the Shimano rep I talked to), 105 seems even closer to Dura Ace and
Ultegra than 9-speed 105 was.

I hope that the price gap between 105 and Ultegra does stay the same.
If it does, 105 will be a really good value. The crankset isn't as
sculpted and polished as DA, but aside from that the differences really
seem minute.

double/triple *including* bearings, chain 18.50, derailer 36/37
short/medium, compact crank 184 incl. BB, STI levers 179, brakes 56.50.

This compares to '05 105 and DA prices: cassette 32,50/122, crank 94/103
ex BB/310 ex BB, chain 15.50/26.50, derailer 35/38 and 95, STI 174/325,
brakes 59.59/191.

So yeah, prices are up a little, but only by minimal amounts. Also note
that it's primarily the parts that are actually different more than
cosmetically that get an increase -- especially the cassette.

Finish and weight. I'm glad the lower end groups are more alike now
that so different as in the past. ALL 10s stuff has gone up in price...

I still think Veoce 10s is a better option(cheaper than 105 as well),
particularly with the new Veloce compact...

www.totalcycling.com lists the 10 speed Shimano 105 stuff. And Ultegra
and Dura Ace so you can compare prices. And they have Campagnolo.

As for ergonomics, the 9 speed STI levers for 105, Ultetgra, and Dura
Ace were exactly the same shape. How can you say the 10 speed parts
will be more ergonomic than that? The 9 speed cranksets all had the
same "q" factor, for those who care about such things. Again, how can
the 10 speed Shimano stuff be more similar? As for weight of
components, can you tell a difference while riding?

BBs are respectively 26 and 31, incidentally, so the crankset prices
total'd be 120/129 and 341 for the cranksets including BB.

Yep. Meant to mention that.

Note that the new 105 crankset comes with a BSA threaded BB, whereas
Ultegra and DA offer a choice of BSA/Ital separately. I don't know if the
105 Hollowtech II BB will be available separately at all -- if not you'll
be forced to go to Ultegra/DA for eventual wear replacements, and if you
have an Italian BB you have to start off with an Ult BB (of course you
then do have the 105 BSA one for ebay).

Also: they say it's available from October '05, and it appears to be
orderable right now.

I think he meant how close 9sp 105 was to 10sp DA and Ultegra.

Incidentally, that compact crank isn't 105, but 'non-series', the
FC-R 700.
