My commute bike (ok, my only working bike) is a Raleigh Pioneer. It's
had multiple component changes, including a new chainset and cranks, and
I've refitted the chaincase because then I don't need to worry so much
about getting oil on the trousies. However...the fitting is a bit
[censored]. The chaincase (a large plastic affair) is bolted on in three
places only, one bracket right near the back that attaches to the
chainstay, and a spider affair that sits under the bottom bracket "nut".
The spider and the bracket are both weak, so every time it gets
kicked/banged, it shoves the chaincase into the chain. And,
unfortunately, the pedal hole in the chaincase is so flippin' large that
you can almost, but not quite, pass the largest cog - with chain
attached - through it. This, naturally, leads to it jamming 8-).
So: can one obtain a chaincase that doesn't have a Silly Size hole in
it? Or are the geometries so specific that they're only ever made for
one design of bike with manufacturer-equipped parts?
