I bet you have an unramped and un-pined chainring for the 38. Look at the chainring. Are the teeth
all the same size? (compare to the big ring to see what I mean). Are there any pins or ramps on the
surface? Again, look at the 52 to see this. Either your 38 was meant for a double, and thus does not
have the ramps. Or as the other poster suggested, you have it backwards, so the ramps are facing the
larger ring (rendering them useless).
I bet it's a 'flat' chainring. If so, you're going to have to get a different one, or suffer poor
shifting from the granny. If you can't take it back, I may be interested in it. :-) I have a
cross bike with a single chainring on the front so that would be perfect for really hilly
courses. John Rees
