Help: Shifting Problems

I once had that problem with a middle chainring. When I looked at I discovered that the two sides
were not the same. I reversed it and it worked just find.

I don't know if that is the case here, but it may be worth a try.

I bet you have an unramped and un-pined chainring for the 38. Look at the chainring. Are the teeth
all the same size? (compare to the big ring to see what I mean). Are there any pins or ramps on the
surface? Again, look at the 52 to see this. Either your 38 was meant for a double, and thus does not
have the ramps. Or as the other poster suggested, you have it backwards, so the ramps are facing the
larger ring (rendering them useless).

I bet it's a 'flat' chainring. If so, you're going to have to get a different one, or suffer poor
shifting from the granny. If you can't take it back, I may be interested in it. :-) I have a
cross bike with a single chainring on the front so that would be perfect for really hilly

Hi John:

The chainring is pinnned and ramped. Not to the extent ast the Shimano chainring but it does have
them. Amazingly, the upshifting from small 30t chainring to the middle 38t chainring is absolutely
flawless. However, I can't downshift the chain from the middle chainring to the small chainring.
I've tried angling the derailleur cage and lowering the derailleur as much as possible without
having the cage rub agains the chainring. Can the chainring be too small in its outer diameter so
that the chain cant be lifted high enough by the derailleur to go from the middle to the small
chainring?

If it is a matter of size, you're definitely welcome to the chainring. The only ride it's had is on
my workstand. Can't believe how much prettier the Specialite TA chainrings are compared to the
Shimano counterparts.

Too much tension in the derailleur cable or binding of the cable somewhere in the run. YOu can test
the binding by putting the bike in stand and downshifting. If the chain doesn't drop, push on the
derailleur cage.

Try a ultegra triple front der...we had the same problem...the DA front der doesn't seem to have as
much inward travel as the ultegra..

Two possibilities.

1. The low gear limit screw is screwed down too far (the limit screws are the two screws next to one
another, usually on top of the derailer). The low is usually marked "L". When you shift the lever
all the way into low, is there slack in the cable? If so this is definitely the problem. loosen
this screw.

2. The cable is too tight. There should be an adjustment barrel. Look for a knurled cylinder
somewhere near a cable housing stop. Loosen it to give more slack in the cable and allow the
derailer to move further in.

Obviously, some tinkering will be necessary to get it right.

Hi Guys:

I did go back to my Ultegra derailleur and I have been able to shift the chain from the 38T to the
30T chainring. It does take a bit of time for it to downshift and definitely is not as smooth and
crisp as the original 42T Shimano chainring.

Could the chainring be at fault? I do notice that the Shimano chainring's teeth have different sizes
and dimensions when compared to the uniform shape of the Specialite chainring teeth.
