i had a grifter and a chopper as a kid ... oh my god, i just remembered what happened to me on
the chopper!

a friend wanted to ride so i took rear backie position, about half a mile from home my foot decided
it wanted to get chewed up in the rear mech's ...

lots of blood, half a heel hanging off and one new pair of destroyed trainers later and i wake up in
hospital after having my heel sewed back on .. for some reason i wasnt allowed to put any pressure
on this foot for a fair chunk of time! ... been ages since i remembered that

well, just to add to that ... we were going down a small hill and gettin up a good speed when my
foot slipped in between the frame and the rear wheel ... the spokes i think done most of the damage
but i dont actually recall the event at all, only the waking up in hospital and the following months
of healing ... it was after that i had the grifter, kids dont learn do they - lol !!!

I've only got dim memories of the incident now but I once shoved my foot through the spokes trying
to copy other kids who had no brakes by using foot pressure on the tyre. As I remember I carried on
to where I was going minus a few spokes. Must have tough feet.

Oh and if anyone's interested I've now found out the answer to my original question is
Grifter...Strika...Boxer. I can sleep easy now.

nah, i was on the back of the bike - to this day i dont even remember who was riding the bike, just
remember it was a friend ... must have really had a fright after i started screaming or blacking otu
or whatever happened, coz i dont remember any of it

i guess its the minds way of getting around painful events by helping you to forget them

hey, enough of the fixation with the gear levers, my heel was ripped off and there was NO
interaction with the gear lever! and yes, those gear levers had a wide sideways handle to change
gear and the thought is, ouch!

This broght back memories for me too. I had a Grifter and my younger brother a Stryka/Strika (?). I
borrowed his bike and was belting down a hill nearby when the back wheel came loose and basically
fell out - leaving me with horrendous cuts all over and a trip to casualty.

The worst bit was having my pocket money stopped for a couple of months by my Dad to pay for the
repairs to the bike which I had been told on numerous occasions was too small for me.

On the subject of squeamish, I was racing my Tomahawk against my best friend's Elswick Flier, when
he caught the brake cables and down I went. Next thing I hear is "Daren don't look at your leg..."

Well you would wouldn't you?

Tendons all over the place and a huge gaping hole in my calf. A trip to A&E and 40 stitches later
and I get two weeks off school (I did it on the last-but-one day of the summer holiday). The only
sympathy from the nurse was "all I've had is bee stings all day...". Oh and my mum went out with the
ambulance driver.

The rounded nut covering the saddle bolt had come off and the end of the bolt just went through my
leg. I have a lovely 6" scar on my right calf to this day.

Paul Humphris, will claim it was an accident till the day we die, but I think he didn't want to be
dropped on the bend :-)

Incidently, my son (6) went down badly on his Raleigh Kobo last night and ripped a big hole in his
knee. I patched him up and his mother said "you'll have a scar from that". Big grin from Thomas and
the comment "will it be as big as Daddy's?"

Kids and Kids bikes great days, great grazes...
