Hub Recomendations please

I have the feeling that the 105 are very good, but considering tourer
use you might like the better sealing of the MTB version. 105 derailers
are more sturdy then the ultegras, they are definitely not bad, but
they might be heavy!

Maybe you could fit the old XT with new rubbers and a grease-job?

It might be worthwhile having a chat with Spa Cycles...I'm sure that I've
read somewhere that they hae a special offer on some bullet proof touring
wheels don't know the spec tho'

I'm still using a '92 Deore DX rear hub and have a pre parallax XT rear
that's still good in reserve, fine hubs IMHO. I haven't got on so well using
later LX rear hubs for mtbing though, the labryinth free-hub seal seemed not
effective but other posters using them on year round commuter bikes have got
on ok with them.
I'd either re-use the hub (economical only if you self build) or perhaps go
to XT or better yet something like a Hope (which I've done).
Bear in mind my use is mtb not touring.

I'll second the warning about Deore LX hubs. The first time I serviced mine
(about a year from new) I discovered the left cone was pitted, necessitating
some replacement bearings and a new cone. Considering this hub is in use on
a tourer rather than a mountain bike I was Not Impressed.

There's been no further trouble, so the hub was perhaps misassembled at the
factory.

all Shimanohubs are misassembled at the factory, ie they are supplied
with zero play to enable wheelbuilding. Before use they should be
adjusted so that they have zero play when installed with a skewer.
Adding more grease at this point won't hurt either

I have to say Me too to that one. I am about to purchase new cones and
balls to rebuild it.
Maybe I should put a dynohub wheel on the christmas list.

Grease was fine. It was the pitting on both cone and balls that was
annoying. Only done about 5k miles.

I think newer XT (and LX etc) hubs probably require more space than your
older one. So you might have to go with the "road" hubs or respace your rear
triangle.

New hubs are designed for more gears, and are therefore wider. If
you get one, you will need the frame altered so that the hub fits.
