I guess that's the problem: my lock and chain weigh about the same a
carbon-framed Pinarello - who'd want to double their all up weight by
carrying it?

Got a nice little accesory for the Abus disk lock, though, its a holder
that bolts to the luggage rack (designed - and bought - for a m/cycle)
- doesn't rattle, always to hand, and it easy to carry the thick cable,
wrapped around a seatpost or limb or something....

Was that on Sunday on the Milk Race Ride ? Bngger. I'll keep my eyes
and ears open in the area. I was close to BA on Sunday, did a loop up
to Beamsley, tea in Dunnies.

Yes.
About 10 years ago I had my Trek 830 nicked from outside the local Tescos.
Stupid me had it only on a cheap thin cable lock - learned my lesson there.
I reported to the police, and they took a full description.
Some time later I was contacted by Southwark police - they had taken the
bike off someone. Curiously, they didn't charge him with anything, as he
said it was his. I got it back as I had more legal claim to it, or
something along those lines.

Anyway, the moral of the story is - report any thefts to the police.
They now have a big computerised form which the PC will fill in,
with all sorts of identifying details.
And AFAIK they do match up recovered bikes.

Some years back I had my wheels nicked when the bike was in a railway
station compound.
I reported it and gave a full description - Campag hubs, super Champion
rims, vredestein tyres and so on. they were pretty average wheels and I
never thought I'd see them again.

A couple of weeks later I received a call from the police station asking
me to go along and identify some wheels :-)
After my loss, the police had mounted an observation on the bike
compound and caught a scrote red-handed taking various bits off bikes.
His garage was then searched and they found an Alladin's cave of stolen
bikes and accessories - including my wheels.

I must say I was pretty astounded to see them again.

someone else. I managed to negotiate recovering it, because the new owner
parked it on the same rack that I was using/

My brother had the corresponding thing happen, when he saw a bike of his
locked up in town, went and reported it to the police, whereupon a fire
engine on blues and twos came round the corner, and 6 men jumped out and
snipped the lock. Which was impressive.

My son once found his stolen bike before he knew it was stolen. It was a
few years ago, I think he was about 15. He went out to a local shop with
a friend one morning, and they saw the bike in a local garden, with a
man. As youngsters they would not have dared tackle the man themselves,
but coincidently the friend's father walked past at the time, saw that
it was Samuel's bike and claimed it.
The downside to the story is that the police did not/could not bring a
prosecution because the man said he had bought it from somebody passing
by! Some accessories and tools were missing and never recovered.

I had a bike stolen (from a locked College bike shed, door kicked in
and a couple of hunderd quids' worth of door-lock smashed) and met a
young teenager riding it past the College about a week later. I had
a short and somewhat strained converation with the lad before he
realised that he was returning the bike, and made his escape.

If the man had bought the bike, at least he was punished for his
stupidity by losing his cash to the thief.

Saw a cable lock in Austria earlier this year that weighed about 50 grams.
It could proabaly be cut with wire cutters, but stops the opertunist.

I think I described it here, but I'll get back to you later if I don't find
it.

Long and short of it is, it was a German bike, a German student had had
hers, the same model, stolen, she saw my sister's and told the polis, who
snipped the lock and gave it to her. And told my sister when she reported
her bike stolen.

Then they were tardy about getting it back to her, so I locked it up when I
saw it, leaving a note. The woman who had been using it called the police
(who were only over the road (I was working in Old College, Edinburgh at the
time)), who came over, negotiated stuff and took the bike into custody for
my sister to claim. When she asked about being refunded the price of the
lock, she was told to claim on here insurance.

<sigh>

Anyway, I think that describes most of it, so ignore my first sentence.

yep that's the ride. Don't know whose bike it was as I had just left
to take a group of slower rideers off towards Beamsley expecting teh
bunch to swoop us up at Ilkely or otley.

As it was we were back at lawnswood when teh rode in.

BTW, what is the weirdest rendezvous for a run? This started at the
Crem!
