  1. OK so I did a few things wrong......

First was riding in Flagstaff at >7000' for my first ride

Second was riding up the trail with flat pedals with no toe clips, for my
    first ride

Third, I rode after working construction all day after being out of
construction for over a year and a half........for my first ride.

Fourth was riding down the trail with flat pedals with no toe clips, for my
first and only ride so far.

Thankfully I'm not singing tenor, didn't crash, and got to ride. The Kenda
tires hooked up better than expected though I aired them down a lot. I may
now know why JD rides with toe clips.....because it's a lot easier to walk
in hiking type shoes than bike shoes. don't ask.........

I'll try toe clips next but I'm seeing new clipless pedals for my new ss.

Gary (wishing I was springier than I am......)

But you're used to that noise.

    More exercise.

    Whiner.

That could be scary if it got technical. I prefer clipped in almost every
    time..

Which Kendas have you got? I've got the big Kinetics on my SS, and a Blue
Groove on the hardtail. Great tires.

Watch your knees. It's tempting to stand up and hammer everywhere, it's so
much fun, but from my exp and others, you oughta start out kinda slow,
since your knees aren't used to the fact that they don't get to spin easy
gears when the going gets tough.

What ratio are you running? I'm running 32x20 and it helps me clean most
hills, but tops out around 20mph on the flats and downhills.

    And I thought I was a wimp at 32x18 ;-)

It's ok to admit you made a mistake. Now you can return to that double
boinger fluffy couch of a full-sus rig :-)

yea, I did that this morning only because I was riding with another guy and
didn't want to slow him down. He had an extra set of toe clips so I'll try
    that tomorrow.

who knows? I guess I should walk and and check. It's 2:1, that's all I was
told so stand to reason it's 32x16 but it doesn't feel that difficult....

hold on......it is 32x16, tires are Kenda Karma 26x2.0.

I was spinning like crazy on a lot of the trail I rode but I had to walk
several of the short little rocky climbs. I think that was due to not being
able to pull the pedals (which I was instinctively trying to do....).

I'm thinking I might go to a 20 on the rear to continue but then what's the
    point.... :-)

Sounds like a good indoctrination. It only gets better from there!

As far as pedals, I'd just go with whatever you are used to on your
other bike(s). May as well not be learning new pedal handling with the
other skills you're needing to perfect IMO.

I'm still convinced that clips are incredibly awkward offroad, and
clipless are they way to go!

You use clipless on your other bike, so why wouldn't you on the SS?
