  1. I had bought a new moutain bike this summer and I have been riding it a fair bit this summer. I had an old road bike (nothing special just a cheep $200 run of the mill bike), but it was a bit beat-up and tired looking.

I have gotten fairly good on the moutain bike so today I thought "What the heck, I'll dust off the old roadie and give it a spin". Wow! what a difference, even though the wheels has a shimmy (one even has a ding in the rim) the brakes are in bad shape, the tires are old and cracked, the gears need cleaning, etc. I still could crank some pretty good speed out of it (more than on the MTB). I definitly have a winter project now, get this thing cleaned up and have a blast next summer buzzing about on the roadie.

Then maybe the year after get a real road bike.

My 50 km bike-a-thon is tomorrow, still haven't decided wether to ride the 25 km to the event or load the bike into the car. I am leaning towards the idea of riding to the event and making the day a century ride.

I guess I'll decide when I wake up.

  2. if you're in fair shape, the whole round trip plus bike-a-thon is still only 100 k's. i'd say go for it. plus, it's a bike-a-thon; it's only as much of a race as you feel like making it. stop someplace and suck down a few cold ones if so inclined.

good luck and have a nice ride

It's 6:40 am, now and I think I am going to go for it. It'll be nice to have my first century ride for a day under my belt. Going to go out and have a great day of biking. I'll post back how it went.

  4. Had a great day it was awsome. The weather was great, early moring started out cool (about 7 C, got up to about 12C by the start and 20C by the end). The ride was a bit windy but not to bad, they had some killer hills in it, especial the last one, steep ba$#!rd, but I didn't get off the bike even when I got down to 7 km/h, dam struggle but I made it.

I rode my bike to the event in the morning had about 45 minutes before it started, did the bike-a-thon and then had about 2:30 before riding home.

About 10 minutes after the ride my legs got really sore, the upper thighs has a dull ache that lasted a good 20 minutes, it was hard to get relief from the pain, I tried standing, sitting, lying down, they only gave temporary relief. After 20 minutes though they felt fine.

Part way into the bik-a-thon I thought the tires felt spongy, but I didn't have a pump so I just had to keep on as it was. On my ride home I stopped at a gas sation to check the tires. I had only 30 psi  on my the MTB tires. I pumped them up to 60 psi, felt better but my legs were so spent I don't think it made much difference.

Anyway here are my times for the day:
    Ride to Bike-A-Thon: 22.22 km 00:58:28
    Bike-A-Thon : 49.76 km 2:16:39
    Ride home : 29.31 km 1:23:18
    Total : 100.29 km 4:38:25

  5. I love when I can say "I TOLD YOU SO!!"

Fix that 10 speed really well, slap a cheapo computer on it and see how fast can you go!😄

I certainly will, can't wait for next summer to roll around now. Got 790 km on the cycle computer so far this summer (got it in mid July). Now my goal is to break a thousand before the end of the riding season for me. Gives me a couple of weeks, hopefull to the end of October at least, maybe a bit more.

They had a prize draw at the end of the bike-a-thon, got a nice wind breaker jacket.

  7. One of the reasons I parked the MTB and got back on the road was... the need for speed. The MTB hits a brick wall around 20-25 mph and short of a very steep hill, just won't go any faster.

A couple of my favorite rides sport a long gradual downhill leading to a sharp climb back up. I get going around 40-45mph on the downhill, and just rocket up the other side. Esctacy!
