  1. They did. The weather people lied.

Today was forecast to be sunny, warm and with less wind than yesterday.
Excellent thought I as I had a 50-mile cycle ride to do.

Cue this morning - cold, strong headwind on the way out and on the way home,
cold strong crosswind/headwind... grey overcast skies, clouds scudding
    along.

    BAH!

    Cheers, helen s

Clear and sunny where I am, but a bit cold. Should be warm enough for a
pleasant session on the road bike this afternoon.

We got a healthy dump of snow on the higher peaks last night, looks very
pretty contrasted with the changing colors of the aspens.

  3. Hey, no kidding. I usually hit Weather Underground and the Weather
Channel before I go to bed at night. It was supposed to be a
cool-but-tolerable 7 degrees Celsius here this morning. I woke up and
called the local weather -- 1C?! It's still September, man, I'm not
ready for this bundling up stuff! :-)

High winds, falling trees and heavy rain changing to high winds, &
bright sun (have not checked on the trees lately) but fairly warm

Vancouver has a heavy rainfall warning right now,
with the red screen on the Weather Channel 'n all.

Soup makin' weather. If I had a leg-of-lamb bone
I'd make a batch of pea soup.

A forecast miss is not a lie. A lie is when they know it will be cold
and crappy, but the bike club gives them money to misrepresent things
so the event turnout will be good.

Happens all the time here. But it's usually more political in nature.
    Withold your dues.

are you serious? how does one prepare a puffer mushroom for human

They've got to be fresh, and not old and about
    to explode.

I like most mushrooms just brazed. But here are
    some recipes:

    http://www.mssf.org/cookbook/puffballs.html

The parmesan puffballs looks interesting. As long
as the cheese doesn't overwhelm the mushroom flavour.

I also like the idea of using big, thin slices as crepes
with which to wrap seafood, for which Max's [neighbour's]
    mushroom sounds ideal.

    cheers,
    Tom

Wunderground.com was dead on for me. They predicted the
downpour/storm/high winds to the minute. Lucky for me; I was biking to a
funeral and was wearing a full suit and tie; got the bike secured and me
inside with 60 seconds to spare. My friends dealing with a limo (the
second limo) got drenched. My friends in the first limo were 8 minutes
behind me on a 4-mile trip.

Mmmmmmm.... it's the steak of fungus. Now my mouth is watering, and
there can't be a puffball within a hundred miles of here. Sigh... I
miss mushroom season (though not as much as I like warm, dry winters).

Even a touch of yellow, and you shouldn't bother, in my opinion -- should be
snowy white throughout. You should always cut a puffball in half to ensure
    proper identification and freshness.

We're under a severe wind warning- high winds gusting up to 90k! This
morning at about 6 30 I woke up to something banging. It turns out it
was the neighbor's chair from their balcony (we have a shared balcony)
that blew all the way over! Rain as well- it's almost like a cat 1
    hurricane!

We're getting that in montreal-trees blown down, power failures, etc.

  19. I don't know whether you are in the US or not, but if you are I
recommend the NOAA website (www.noaa.gov). They have an excellent
local forecast section - look on the left side of the page, and type in
your city and state. It will take you to a page with current forecast
and up to the minute radar. Bookmark that page and you are good to go.
Here on the East Coast their forecasts are consistently accurate, and
you can watch the radar to see exactly where the rain is.

Incidentally, yesterday I had the pleasure of riding in a 20 mph
tailwind both to and from work - a front moved through in the middle of
the day. I felt bad for those commuting in the opposite direction, who
got a very stiff breeze in their faces morning and afternoon. Today
is beautiful - sunny, 60 degrees, no wind. (I'm in Philadelphia).

I think she's British, so that won't help her much.

Neither will knowing that Environment Canada has something comparable
at http://weather.ec.gc.ca/ , but that'll at least help the Canadians.

Hmm... EC has a link from their Canada map page for world weather, and
that takes you to a page that refers to NOAA for the USA and also to
http://www.worldweather.org/ for worldwide reports/forecasts. That might
be more useful for people outside of North America.

ObBike: EC is telling me I should have a slight tailwind for my 70km-ish
ride tomorrow morning, down from 20km/h this evening and picking up to
20 again late morning. 'Twill be nice if they're wrong about it dying
    down overnight...
('Twill also be nice if going from an occasional 40-50km day to a 70km
ride is as relatively-pleasant as the first 50km day was after rarely
doing more than 20. At least this time I'm making sure I have lots of
water and simple carbs with me; lack thereof is what made the last 2km
of the 50km day Somewhat Unpleasant.)
