Hi dude (hope you don't mind me using your first name)

Welcome to the waiting zone for aspiring unicyclists!

I'm just wondering if anyone out there in Texas (OK, I know it's a big
place) might have a uni they could lend Mr Withasock? Or at least meet
up to give him a go?

I doubt there are any Unicycles in all of Texas... it's virtually
unheard of around here. That's why it'd be even cooler, I'd be like the
only one to ride a unicycle in a 50 mile radius XD

Perhaps even shocked. I know there are some in Dallas, and hopefully
someone from there will respond. There are many of us in San Antonio
and in Austin. If you can make it down sometime, we will help you any
way we can. Get your hands on any unicycle you can to start learning,
and ask questions here when you need help.

Get a uni as soon as you can. It's the most fun I've ever had. Got my
first one off ebay for $50. I bet there's a bunch of unicyclists in
Dallas. You've just got to find them. Heck, I thought I was one of
only 2 or 3 in my little town of 50,000 people but after I got into I
found that there's probably 30 or more uni riders here.

There are a lot of unicyclist in texas. Krashin Kenny is from San
Antonio i believe. Im in southern Oklahoma. Where do you live? Maybe we
could get together and ride sometime.

Exactly. When you start riding sometimes it's somewhat surprising as to
how many unicyclists start coming out of the woodwork. Before I rode I
had seen two unicyclists at my school and didn't think that there were
any more, but since I started riding everywhere I've had a decent amount
of people who can ride stop me.

It's just one of those things that you think you're alone on until you
actually get really into it yourself, then you realize that there are
plenty more people out there doing the same.

Hey give me a shout sometime. I live in Dallas (well in a suburb of
Dallas in cedar hill) I dont have one to lend you (not yet, i'm looking
to get a second one soon though) but i'd be willing to let you give mine
a try sometime. Its a torker LX 24". I may even be able to give you a
hint or two (im not a great rider myself but i can freemount and i ride
about 4 miles a night).

I live in pottsboro, right around the border of texas and oklahoma. I
don't know if I have a uni I can lend right off hand. I'm pretty into
all the ones I have. I do, however. Can lend you a 16" jugglebug or
somesort that I have 🙂

Wow thanks for the quick responses and good advice, guys. I'll see if I
can get a uni earlier than christmas, I hope I can convince my parents
that it's a worthwhile buy and that buying online will be helpful (they
don't like buying online unless it's necessary, and they've never
expressed any interest in the world of Unies).

To the couple of you who say you live around Dallas or at least
relatively close to the county, thanks for the offers to actually help
me out...I wasn't expecting anyone to actually suggest coming to me
personally and teaching me, ya'll are really friendly. Problem is, I'm
still only 16, as stated, and my parents would not want me to go riding
with someone I met over the internet. I can't blame them for being
protective I guess, but I don't think that would work.

Mark my words though, if I still find myself riding by the time I move
out for college (which hopefully will be the case, I'll use it to get
around campus 😎 ), I'll try to look a few of you up.

And thanks for the eBay suggestion, underdog, I'll consider it. I'll
probably end up going with reliability over price and use unicycle.com,
just to make sure I learn on a good one with no risks.

Once were getting down to 'which uni?' I would suggest a Torker LX or
somthing similar. For those, its pretty safe to buy off ebay, but I
understand about the wary parents thing.🙂

I'm in the 5'8"-5'9" area in height, not sure of my inseam, and probably
~125lbs (yeah I'm a stick). Would a 20" be the right size?

Im almost the exact same height as you, but around 130-135 pounds. I
learned on a 24" and rode it for several years, but I ride 20"es a lot
too, and recently got a 26". It depends on what you would use it for,
personal prefence, etc. I really dont think it matters, for you either
one would be good. You'll just have to decide🙂

I would lean toward 24"...

For learning to ride, and thereafter for learning and doing many
tricks and skills, 20" is the best size indeed. For covering distance,
however, it is way too small. For proper MUni (mountain unicycling) it
is also too small, and the typical 20" isn't sturdy enough either.

You see, it depends. Unsurprisingly, many unicyclists have multiple
unis.

Little? ha, there's 4 riders (+1 nearly riding) in my little house of 6
people. Another rider lives nextdoor, three more in the same street of
17 houses, + a couple more in the village.🙂

Wow. That's a good percentage indeed. You too, Munidobs. I have a
theory that unicycling is infectious. The more people you come into
contact with, the more it spreads. I think everybody, somewhere deep
inside, thinks unicycling is very cool. All they need is to see
someone doing it to get them thinking.

Good to have yet another convert.

It is true though, as soon as people see you riding, they all want to
do it too.
I get random people asking for a go on the uni every time I go out.

And Munidobs, I wish my town was like yours. We have 25000 some odd
people, and me, my dad and one of my friends can ride. One one hand, it
gets lonely, but on the other, you get a lot of attention,😎
