I just put a dual kick stand on my bike, as I got tired of how easy it fell over with a load on the bike. Now is stands straight up, and isn't a problem with some weight on the rack. <g>
However, my wife thinks I should shorten the legs on it, because it holds the front wheel 4 inches off the ground, or the back wheel 3 inches off the ground, and she thinks it looks odd. It doesn't bother me though...
So, my question: anybody using a dual kick stand, and did you shorten the legs? If so, how did you determine how much to cut off?

We put one on our tandem and it too works great. In addition to holding up a loaded bike, you'll find maintenance (oiling chain) easier.
And I did shorten the legs. Given the kickstand was $50, I didn't want to accidently cut them too short so I was careful about figureing out how much to cut off.
I stacked thin boards under both the front and rear wheels until one was just an inch or so off the boards (the other was on the boards), and then measured how high the stacks were and cut that much off each leg of the kickstand. It worked great.

1) Measure the wheel base from contact point to contact point (x) 2) Measure from the grounded wheel to the kick stand (y) 3) Measure how high the lifted wheel is in the air (h) 4) By similar triangles, you should cut h*(y/x) from the legs

For a single kickstand, I found a patch of soft level ground, pushed the kickstand into the ground until the bike was at the right angle, marked how much kickstand was buried, and cut that much off. Ah, ok, thanks. However, the answer I'm looking for how do you determine how much space to leave beneath the wheels when you shorten the kick stand. I guess I didn't state it very well.

Yes and yes.
I calculated the shortening by measuring how far the back wheel was off the ground, halving it and cutting that much off. That allows it to sink a bit on gravel or soft ground. Worked for the tandem and for my wife's bike, both fitted with Pletscher double-leg stands.
