I need to remove & replace the sealed bottom bracket from a Dawes Oxygen mtb. I've removed the cranks but am stuck at the bottom bracket. I have the right bottom bracket tool but when i tried to use it on the non-chainring side it snapped some of the teeth on the BB itself. As a result i can't get enough purchase to turn the BB and remove it. I can see the BB is threaded so i'm also worried about damaging the thread in the frame when trying to remove it.

Are you turning it the right way? The left hand cup goes the opposite way to a normal thread.

I've tried it both ways & couldn't get it to move at all. The trouble is that now i've broken the teeth on the bb itself, the bb tool doesn't stay in place properly. I think it may need something more extreme, drilling out or something even? Any ideas?
yes its the non-drive side. so does it turn clockwise or anti-clockwise to unscrew it? Also, are bike shops likely to be able to remove the bb even though the bb teeth are broken at one side?

Non drive side is always right-hand thread. Turn it anti-clockwise to undo it. If you've never had it out before, then it prolly has some sort of thread-lock on it. Try applying some heat.
I recently tried to remove the BB out of my Dawes Audax frame. I was buggered, it didn't want to come out.
I caved in and took it to the LBS who worked their pro magic and removed the BB however the bad news was: the BB had been assembled cross-threaded. Apparently this is easy to do, esp. with the air tools the factories use to whizz 'em together. Following telephone discussions with the LBS, the supplying dealer and a certain Mr Mike Mudd at Dawes UK the frame has been sent back to Castle Bromwich where they are busy swapping over parts (not much actually as I stripped it all down myself) prior to putting them onto a nice shiny new frame which they are telling me will be here at Castle Bramah mid next week.
The man Mudd was really good, he's the warranty manager at Dawes. From his sighs of resignation I got the impression he's had more than enough cross threaded bottom bracket issues. But don't quote me... however, a new frame is more than acceptable as a solution.
I should say though, the thing that swung it for him was the discussion he had with my LBS that did the removal. If I'd have got it out at home, I suspect he would have been less impressed with MY judgement. Given that it cost me a tenner for the LBS to remove the BB, I'd suggest you find a decent shop near you rather than try and bully it out yourself.

Thanks Tony, My main bike is a Dawes Audax too :-) The oxygen mtb i picked up for £20 recently for short rides & locking up at the train station etc. It's in quite poor condition & definately wouldn't be under any Dawes warranty. It's a lesson learnt though, i'll be very careful if i ever need to change the bb on the Audax!

Take it to your local bike shop.
If you can't get more experienced help locally, soak it in Plus Gas or similar penetrating fluid, preferably overnight, then use a large Stilson type pipe wrench on it. Make /certain/ you are turning it the right way, see Park Tools or Sheldon Brown's websites. It's almost certainly 'English' thread.

Did you already get the drive side out? If you did, and its a cartridge BB, then the chances are that the non-drive side is just a liner cup (possibly plastic if its cheap Shimano), and so if the drive side comes out OK (by screwing it clockwise), it will most likely be possible to get the cup out. I would do this with a cobbled together device made out of a piece of threaded rod which would enable me to clamp a suitable tool onto the offending cup very tightly, and put a very long lever on the tool to get enough leverage to undo it. If its plastic, it makes the hacksaw approach a lot easier - cut a few slots and apply a little brute force and ignorance. If its not a cartridge bottom bracket, it would still be the case that getting the drive side off would allow you to get the spindle out and use the above approach. If you're nervous about trying the other side, and its made of the same material, then have a go at bolting the tool in place before applying force.
A decent bike shop would almost certainly be able to remove it. If not, there is a small chance that it is impossible, and a very large chance that its not really a decent bike shop.

OK, I saw the following trick in an LBS. Use a long bolt and washer to bolt the exractor to the bottom bracket, this way you don't have the problem of it twisting out. Next a *lot* of WD40. Lastly a bit of heat.
It wasn't easy, but I couldn't get the bloody thing out at all. Half a tin of grease goes in with the new one now.

No i haven't got the drive side out yet Jim. This bike has been very challenging so far! the crank threads were messed up so the only way i could get the cranks off was with a hacksaw. I've got the non-drive side crank off & had the problem with the BB. The drive-side crank is still on at the moment as it was harder to saw through without hitting the chain-rings. I might be able to get the drive-side crank off tommorrow.

I may be barking up the wrong tree here, but you are using a crank extractor tool to get the cranks off, aren't you? They don't just come off easily just because you undo the crank bolts, you need to use the right tool. Its usually about 6 quid or so, and screws in to the thread around the hole you took the crank bolt out of. Check you're doing this right before you hacksaw the right hand crank off, as there is a significant difference in cost between a left hand crank and a complete crankset.

Looks like you need to get the other side off next, as the splines are a bit mashed on the non-drive side. Try the "bolt the tool to it" technique if you have either a long enough crank bolt or some other way of bolting the tool onto the spindle. Drive side is clockwise to undo.

Put the left crank back on, take the bolt out the right crank, go for a ride. It'll come off. Even better since the crank is knackered you are not bothered about saving it so no need to go careful or stop as soon as it starts to loosen.

ok, i finally got the drive-side crank off with a combination of hacksaw, chisel & swearing.. The BB on the drive-side is also stuck tight & i'm worried about breaking the splined teeth on that side too. Also if i were to bolt the BB remover to the bike so it can't slip out, I can't then see how i'd be able to turn the BB remover because the bolt would be in the way? Unless i were to then put the bolted BB remover in a vise & turn the whole bike frame? Just really worried about making the bike un-useable... If the threads in the BB were shot to pieces, would there be some way of fitting a non threaded BB in there? I don't have any experience of these.. just thinking aloud really. thanks to all who helped so far :-)

Mount your remover tool in a well bolted down bench vice, push the bottom bracket down onto it (and if possible with the help of someone else) bear down as hard as you can on the bottom bracket while twisting the frame the correct way to undo the cup.

Thanks for the help everyone. I finally got the BB taken out on monday :-) I didn't want to buy a vice so tried clamping the BB tool in a wooden work-bench, but it wouldn't grip tight enough to keep it still. So on monday i finaly had chance to get the frame to a bike shop. I had to call 3 shops before i got to one who would have a go! But Brooks of Fleetwood got it out without any problems. Got the new BB in now & ready to give this bike a second lease of life. :-)
