Beginning road cycling, and a tad lost...

It'll be fine for road biking. I wouldn't risk taking it to school though, you might as well hang a big sign on it saying "STEAL ME!"

I don't know of too many people who do training rides with backpacks on, but that doesn't mean it can't be done (unless you mean camelbak, in which case I use one for longer rides).

Yeah, the 1400 will be just fine for cycling - but I would second shannon's dad about using it for commuting.
