There was a similar thread in the bike cafe titled, 'Test, ignore.' I believe it's now about 3 pages long. It's amazing what we'll respond to!

Serious question:

What are the best things to pay special attention to when you take a test ride? Does this differ between a new bike and a vintage/used bike?

Only morbid curiosity, since I will never spend the money for Dura-Ace:

Could a typical recreational cyclist tell the difference between a well tuned bike with Shimano's lower end derailleurs and one with equally well tuned Dura-Ace derailleurs? (Besides the fact that one will probably be riding a bike that is several pounds lighter).

When test-riding a new bike, listen to it. A happy bike is a quiet bike.
I have turned my icon through 90 degrees, not too much of a change, surely?
