I was sent a notice from the US Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana for a husband and wife who have filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy. The thing is, I've never heard of these people nor have I ever done business in Louisiana. And, I don't know of any one or any company who owes me money at the moment. Anyone ever received a notice like this before where you've never done business with the people filing? Also, is there any way to find out just why I am "party" to this i.e. what they say they owe me or what I owe them?
BTW, they filed August 26th...just before the storm.

A bankruptcy notice is issued by the court from a list of creditors these people think they might owe money to. We get them all the time for an Urgent Care I do billing for and nine times out of ten there is nothing owing on their account or it is so pastdue it already went to our collections agency months/years ago. Could just be a mistake, or meant for a different John Hanson. If you dont know anyone by that name and no one owes you money then just toss it. Now if you knew these people, then you have a certain amount of time (mentioned in the decree) to send in an itemized statement to the court to be considered as part of their bankruptcy settlement where, if you are lucky, the court will order payment of pennies on the dollar owed to you by the person filing it. In most cases we just have to write off the amount owed and never see them again as a patient.

Lord knows there are enough John Hansons in Minnesota. I even know a few of them. There's even another one here in Cottage Grove. I met him about ten years ago when I brought my company truck into a Goodyear in Minneapolis. He was managing the store. He might share my name but he doesn't look anything like me. He was about 6' 2" and 400 pounds...and about 10 years older than me. Oh, I only mention that because I used to get phone calls for him.
