One fairly comprehensive volume is Lennard Zinn's book, "Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike
Maintenance" which you can find at many book stores and some bike shops. Amazon.com sells it for
about $15. The book is worth having even if you use the newsgroups for assistance, since the book
will provide useful diagrams and will explain some of the terminology that will allow you to ask
better questions and describe problems.

Bicycle owners manuals are really worthless and will not tell you how to care for the bike.
Thankfully most bikes (especially inexpensive hardtail mountain bikes) are so generic that a fairly
generic reference will be adequate.

As was pointed out, the manual will be useless and it is a waste of time trying to get it. I have
bought two bikes fairly recently. Most of the pages are spent on common-sense safety precautions. As
was suggested go to a bookstore or even your library and find a good book on bicycle repair. It will
pay for itself many times over as everything on a bicycle can be serviced by the owner.

PS What one would really like are the service manuals that come with the components. I have bought a
couple of replacement derailleurs and the service sheets are quite useful.
