Common runner problem. Your butt lube is leaking, get a better brand.

Nice subject - I'm sure the local trolls were entertained. (It didn't get

  9. Hi Bob,,
Ive looked at all the posts and was amused at how many didnt offer any real
advice to a relatively simple question.

Chafing is common in people from time to time. I personally get it in the
warmer weather and when running or walking for prolonged periods.
Ive been in the Army now for some years and the common solution and
preventative measure most people take is to wear bike shorts. I dont do
this but everyone ive seen has used the lycra variety. Im not sure whether
using lycra has any more impact over the cotton/polyester type.
Also type of underwear can be a source of the problem.

    I hope this helps

From a post back in 2001 on chaffing of inner thighs:

As you run I am guessing you don't run from below the ribs, that is,
imagine that your legs start there. So as you run from there your hips
move in sync with your thighs which move in sequence with your lower
    legs.

You are most likely running from the hips where your pelvis doesn't
move as much as it needs so that your thighs are rubbing. That means
that when running from the rib cage, as your right thigh is going back
it doesn't rub against the left thigh because it is moving opposite and
    equal.

More likely than not you're landing heel first if your upper body is
sitting on the pelvis and your lower leg is penduluming forward and
back as opposed to the knees going up and down as if you were pedaling.

Also your sitting posture may be of of slouching and you are not
lifting yourself out of your hips as you sit or stand...image is that
the string in he crown of your head holds you up like a puppet so that
your feet have to stretch down to touch the ground rather than your
upper body sitting like the bust of a statue on the pedestal of your
    legs.

As you run or sit or stand imagine that you're pushing up against a
quarter of an inch so that you always have a sense of the upper body
being slightly pulled up and never collapsing in the pelvis.

Check out Pumping up the body: http://www.mindfulness.com/of4.asp

Also your legs may be roated outward if you see that you stand \ /
rather than | |. Here's one way to massage out the inner thigh. to
help the alignment so that your thighs down rub as much...if you're
collapsing into your inner core of your body.

oi ozzie..i've seen u write about your quad massages lots..u say that
it's the area just above the knee that u should focus more on? so if i
do my little quad massages i should be doing say 70% just above the
knee and 30% on the rest of my quad??

    Grezzo,

When you look at the pictures, you'll get the idea. You start several
inches above the knee, the reason being the area just above the knee is
tendon and you want to work the area of the quad from the musculotendon
junction closest to the knee up through the belly of the quad and
ending at the other end of the musculotendon junction closest to the
    pelvis.

On the sidewalk picture, the idea is not only to slowly slide up the
muscle or down the curb but to allow the curb to hold the muscle in
place as you torque the top side of the body toward the sidewalk.

What happens is that when the muscles of the quad get tight and
shortened they torque the femur and it's usually toward the outside.
Often the reason for people walking splay footed. That torquing of the
quad also then torques the adductors and shortening them so there's
work needed on loosening the quad and also work needed on loosening the
    adductors

This is what I said in a recent post about the inside of the thighs:

Some folklore for you to think about or give a....leg.

Find a chair, kitchen chair or dining room table chair or a folding
    chair.

Wear some sweat pants or nylon warm-up pants.

Straddle the chair so you are facing the back of the chair with the
inside thighs against either side of the chair. Some armless office
chairs are good because of the cushioning on the seat.

Slide down the chair keeping the knees pointed toward the ground which
means the lower legs are bent back and you're probably resting on the
bottoms of the big toes and balls of the feet with the toes bent.

Slowly slide down the chair (like you would be sitting on a saddle -
feet on either side). You can massage out the inner thigh muscles -
adductors. With your forearms resting on the back of the office chair
or kitchen/diningroom chair you can work out the inside thigh muscles
by lifting or lowering your erect body slightly.

    Hope that helps a bit.

    Hi all,
If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm an overweight 25-yr-old male runner, 250 lbs, 6'2". Muscular, but
quite fatular too. A nice blend of the two.

I've tried building up to a marathon twice now, following
normal-looking build-up programs for beginners I found online. But I
    ran into problems.

The first time, last year, I got to about 22 miles a week, when I
would get chafing on the inner thighs. This was when I had gotten
pretty slim (218), but still my thighs just naturally rubbed together.
I had to quit from the painful tenderness of rubbed-raw skin.

This year, I got a bright idea of wearing running tights, the
thigh-length ones. They worked great at first... they fit tightly
(properly named, eh?) and close in the crotch, so everything was
smooth. Then they started to wear down on the inside (so two rough
surfaces developed, propagating some friction), and also loosen as I
got slimmer and handwashed them (does nylon stretch when washed?). I
even tried some of that BodyGlide stuff; but in that area, the
clothing rubs it off. I don't want to buy a new pair of tights every
two weeks, as that is over my budget.

I'm at a loss, I would love any ideas on clothing, or testimonials.

    Thanks!

Heck, there isn´t any hair (or at least any to speak of) growing in
that part of that area where I tend to suffer from chafing: my
non-negligible problem seems to be caused by the edge of "inside pant"
of my running shorts chafing against the inside of my thighs.

Changing the brand or the model hasn´t helped (and I abhor the idea of
running in short tights) and to survive the aftermath of a >90 minute
run I have to apply some vaseline (which I believe is also called
petroleum jelly), in my case a no-brand product sold in a pharmacy.

I only have to forget it to be reminded what perfect bliss is by its
    burning absence:-)

    bodyglide

Bodyglide works, whether for nipples, feet, arms (inner/upper, where
they may brush against the torso), or the crotchular region.

Per Phil M's suggestion, I've also tried olive oil down below and found
that to work beautifully. It has some benefits over Bodyglide even:
    cheaper; eminently spreadable to all your, uh, nooks and crannies;
smells nicer (I recommend a full-bodied extra virgin, especially a nice
    Spanish, but Lebanese or a deep Italian from say Umbria can also work);
and good for your skin - "hey, something my body needs anyway".

Vaseline or bag balm also work but IME are messier.

From year of being baseball catcher and a few bazillion squats plus my
propensity for running hills and my thighs rub regardless of my shorts.
I once had a pair of shorts that had a heavy seam that even Vaseline,
bodyglide or bear grease could not counter. I tossed them. I buy my
shorts in the local stores rather than online for this chaffing reason.
I need to feel the seams

The sole reason I don´t and won´t wear short tights is simply because
IMHO they spell, nay scream "I am a jogger!", I know it is sheer
mindless vanity on my part but I don´t think I could continue to hold

Long lycra tights have never been a problem for me, because everyone
knows that real skiers wear lycra - and that lycra never lies:-)

i am have been a reader of this group for sometime now, my first post -
guys please take it easy on me. I more of a cyclist than a runner.

to address the OP, try get one of those tight shorts to keep things in
place. And if you aren't comfortable being seen in tight shorts, wear a
normal short over it. The important point is that the you need a second
skin on you thighs - so that it will take the chaffing instead of your
skin. The tights also provide the advantage of keeping your skin dry.
With some of the regular shorts, the sweat transportation isn't good, so
the sweat makes your skin soft and chaffing is more serious with wet skin.

    my 2 cents,
    +ravi
