Cheap source of bike parts

Many thanks to Pete and Bob. However these prices are far over the sort of
costs I was hoping for. I'm sure I'll get slammed but I want a cheap
replacement rim for a mountain bike which was cheap in the first place. I'd
rather not write the bike off for the sake of a rim.

Have you tried ebay plenty of cheap MTB rims and even wheels in there.

How about local bike shop or even Halfords for a rim or a complete wheel --
some alloy wheels are remarkably cheap. One could have a bit of work done
on it afterwards by yourself or LBS to bring the build quality up to
scratch.

Alternatively you could spend more on a nice good quality rim or wheel* and
treat it as an investment for a future bike as hopefully it would fit that
too.

Bear in mind that any replacement rim would have to have the same Effective
Rim Diameter as the current rim to reuse the same spokes. This varies from
model to model even when the outer diameter is the same.

Or Kingston-upon-Thames. I was impressed today that someone locked their
bike with a motorbike sized chain to a three foot pillar. I felt like
picking it up, moving it a foot and leaving a note saying "Chain it to
something very high or with an irremovable top". Still, they'd chained the
back wheel to the frame, so only front wheels available today.

I once chained my bike to a lamppost. I was very confused when I got back
and couldn't ride it off - friends had lifted the entire bike over the
lamppost through the main triangle (and put other bikes next to it so it

The cheapest rims come in cheap machine built wheels. Not many
people want to hand build a wheel with cheap rims. Most LBS (the type
that repair bikes) normally have a selection of afforadable machine
built wheels. The good shops will have hand trued them before putting
them out on display.

There is one close to me but their website suggests a bottom price of £14 or
so for a 26" rear wheel.

Yes there are some affordable wheels there. One question is that the rims
don't quote size of tyre. Is there a standard width of rim for mountain
bikes? I assumed that rims would suit tyres which are of course available
in different sizes.

Still extremely cheap for a wheel. Any bike deserves £14 being spent on it.

The absurdly low prices of the cheapest mountain bikes give an unrealistic
impression of what replacement parts should cost. The manufacturers only
achieve those bike prices by foreign massive bulk purchase and assembly.
You could not possibly build a complete bike out of parts for what the bike
cost you, therefore you have to pay what seems like a disproportionately
high price for a new rim or wheel.
