  1. I was just thinking of my next trip out, and how to get water. I normally
just get it from a spring or stream, after checking of course. However, I
just wonderd if it did rain, is rain water safe to drink straight? Ie if
collected from a polethene sheet with a hole in the center.

    Any thoughts?

Why not? Probably best not to collect it next to a power station or
chemical factory though. I would think that the biggest problem would be
that when you need the most water is in hot dry weather. Thinking
about the last month, we've only had about one day of significant rain
    where I live.

Or just after a nuclear power plant accident somewhere within 10000
    miles.

Which would probably affect the streams anyway

I haven't the faintest idea whether it's 'safe' or not, but it's the
sort of thing I'd do without any hesitation whatsoever.

My best guess is that rainwater from a
natural area... not nuclear or chemical as mentioned before... smile
natural rainwater even with its soluble pollutants is likely to be a
lot safer than just drinking from a stream that looks clean.
Looks are deceiving. When I started hiking, we used to say after the
water has ripples and white caps it has been filtered and is okay to
    drink. Well. Maybe.

Since then I have had my share of direct drinking to the fullest
measure and do not plan to subject my body to dysentery again. At least
    not intentionally.

Wouldn't the acid rain melt the poly sheet?

  9. If the rain is THAT acid you will need protection from it too! In the
amount of time you have it exposed it will take a while before you have
worn it out. You do not say where you will be hiking. That could make
    a difference in the rain.
